The Opportunity
We are seeking a strategic, results-driven Purchasing Leader - Packaging to serve as the primary point of contact for all packaging category needs across Abbott Laboratories. This role will drive category strategy, supplier performance, and cost optimization while partnering closely with stakeholders across all four Abbott segments: Diagnostics, Nutrition, Medical Devices, and Pharmaceuticals. You will play a critical role in advancing the "One Abbott Procurement" vision, influencing cross-divisional collaboration, and delivering best-in-class sourcing, contracting, and supplier management outcomes on a global scale.
What You'll Work On
Serve as the primary business partner for packaging procurement, building strong stakeholder relationships and identifying critical business requirements
Translate business strategies into aligned category strategies with clear execution roadmaps
Drive and implement global packaging sourcing strategies while fostering alignment and collaboration across stakeholders
Own and execute purchasing strategies in a collaborative, cross-functional environment, influencing alignment and supporting network optimization initiatives
Oversee key packaging subcategories including flexibles, paper/pulp, thermoforming, and specialty packaging (e.g., desiccants, glass)
Lead complex RFQs, RFIs, and RFPs, including structuring, execution, and supplier evaluation
Guide stakeholders on best practices to secure best-in-class supplier capabilities and support vendor screening and selection processes
Develop and execute fact-based negotiation strategies with high-profile suppliers in a contract-heavy environment
Assess organizational needs and negotiate optimized supplier portfolios that meet strategic category priorities
Build and maintain strong supplier relationships while leveraging supplier capabilities to meet evolving business needs
Monitor market dynamics, supplier landscapes, and pricing strategies across regions, maintaining awareness of trends and their business impact
Communicate market shifts and recommend strategic adjustments to stakeholders as needed
Drive Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) reductions through analytics, strategic sourcing, and data-driven decision making
Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities, including design for sourcing, innovation, process mapping, and cost efficiency initiatives
Ensure the optimal balance between cost savings, quality, and overall value delivery
Define, measure, and track category performance, driving continuous improvement and best-in-class results
Partner with stakeholders and procurement teams globally to deliver aligned, enterprise-wide initiatives
Communicate risks, issues, and resolutions clearly to leadership while driving outcomes
Lead initiatives across virtual, global, and cross-cultural teams
Mentor, coach, and develop procurement talent while fostering a high-performance culture
Guide teams in executing complex sourcing and category strategies
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Finance, or related field
Proven experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or category management
Strong experience in contract negotiation and supplier management
Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and drive cross-functional alignment
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret market trends and cost drivers
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Experience working in complex, global, matrixed organizations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in packaging procurement or category management strongly preferred
Experience supporting multiple business units or divisions
Advanced degree (MBA or related field)
Knowledge of procurement systems and sourcing tools (ERP, sourcing platforms)
Professional certifications (e.g., CPSM, CPM)
Proven track record of cost reduction, innovation, and process improvement initiatives

The base pay for this position is $113,300.00 - $226,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
