The Payroll Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing all payroll accounting activities, ensuring accurate and timely recording of payroll transactions, maintaining compliance with accounting standards, and supporting internal controls over payroll processes. Managing two senior accountants, this role serves as a key liaison between Payroll Services, Human Resources, Accounting/Finance, Payroll Tax, and Benefits, while managing payroll-related reconciliations, accruals, reporting, and system/process improvements.

Responsibilities:
  • Payroll Accounting & Financial Reporting 
    • Manage and ensure accuracy for all payroll-related accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and month-end close processes. 
    • Review and approve payroll journal entries and account reconciliations. 
    • Maintain general ledger integrity for all payroll-related accounts. 
    • Analyze payroll variances and investigate unusual fluctuations
  • Controls & Compliance 
    • Support SOX/internal control compliance related to payroll processes. 
    • Maintain documentation of payroll accounting controls and procedures. 
  • Systems & Process Improvement 
    • Partner with Payroll, HRIS, and IT teams on payroll system implementations, upgrades, and integrations. 
    • Support testing and validation for payroll system changes and acquisitions/integrations. 
    • Identify opportunities to improve automation, efficiency, and accuracy within payroll accounting processes. 
    • Assist with ERP and payroll system reconciliations.
  • Leadership & Collaboration 
    • Manage and develop two senior payroll accountants. 
    • Serve as subject matter expert for payroll accounting matters. 
    • Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Payroll, Benefits, FP&A, Payroll Tax, Internal Audit, and operational leadership
Qualifications:
  • Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree Major: Accounting Degree must be from an accredited college or university.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent education and experience
  • Certifications and/or Licenses: Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred 
  • Customarily has at least five (5) years of accounting experience, including payroll accounting experience. 
  • Some supervisory or lead experience required. 
  • Experience in large corporate or multi-state payroll environments preferred. 
  • Public company/SOX experience preferred. 
  • Experience with ERP and payroll systems such as Oracle, UKG, and ADP preferred.
