    Your Opportunity

Head of Private Assets and Alternative Investments

    Overview:

The Managing Director & Head of Private Assets and Alternative Investments will report to the Chief Executive Officer of Schwab Asset Management and lead a team responsible for managing our expanding portfolio of non-traditional investment management offerings including the planned launch of the Schwab Private Company Fund.

    Key Outcomes:

This leader will be accountable for establishing the strategic direction, investment governance, operating model, and risk discipline required to scale Schwab's private assets and alternative investments platform. The role requires sound independent judgment within approved investment guidelines, strong executive presence, and the ability to connect investment strategy, product innovation, risk management, and client outcomes across SAM/CSIM and the broader Schwab enterprise.

    • Set the long-term strategic agenda for Private Assets and Alternative Investments, including portfolio construction philosophy, product roadmap, governance standards, risk controls, and operating discipline across current and future offerings.
    • Lead the successful development, launch, and scaling of the Schwab Private Company Fund and related offerings, ensuring investment design, legal structure, compliance oversight, operations, distribution readiness, and client experience are aligned from concept through commercialization.
    • Make independent investment and business decisions within approved guidelines, balancing growth, liquidity, valuation, manager selection, operational complexity, fiduciary obligations, regulatory expectations, and Schwab's reputation for client-first stewardship.
    • Oversee risk across the Private Assets and Alternative Investments platform, partnering closely with Risk, Legal, Compliance, Operations, Finance, Product, Distribution, and Technology teams to ensure strong controls, clear accountability, scalable processes, and effective issue escalation.
    • Serve as a senior investment and business advisor to the Chief Executive Officer of SAM/CSIM and the broader executive team, providing informed perspectives on private markets, alternative investment trends, fund performance, competitive dynamics, product opportunities, and enterprise implications.
    • Represent the platform with credibility before the Funds Board of Directors, SAM/CSIM committees, firm-wide risk committees, regulators, and senior enterprise stakeholders, translating complex investment, liquidity, valuation, and governance topics into clear executive-level recommendations.
    • Partner with leadership on the construction and oversight of SPVs serving as building blocks for the Schwab Private Company Fund, ensuring close coordination across sourcing, due diligence, structuring, valuation, operational readiness, and ongoing monitoring.
    • Provide leadership and expertise to third-party investment oversight and asset allocation forums involving private assets, helping shape manager due diligence, allocation recommendations, risk evaluation, and governance practices across Schwab's expanding alternatives ecosystem.
    • Build, develop, and retain a high-performing team of investment professionals, portfolio managers, and research talent, strengthening bench depth, decision quality, accountability, and collaboration across an evolving and strategically important platform.
    • Drive medium- and long-term process improvement initiatives enhancing investment rigor, reporting transparency, regulatory readiness, operational scalability, and confidence among clients, advisors, boards, regulators, and enterprise partners.

    What you have

    Required Experience:

    • 15+ years of progressive senior investment leadership experience across private markets, alternative investments, asset management, portfolio construction, manager research, fund governance, or related investment disciplines.
    • Deep expertise investing in, allocating to, or overseeing private equity, private credit, real estate, infrastructure, venture capital, secondaries, co-investments, hedge funds, or other alternative investment strategies, with strong judgment across multiple market cycles.
    • Demonstrated command of private markets portfolio construction, manager due diligence, valuation practices, liquidity management, risk oversight, investment committee governance, and ongoing monitoring of complex, less-liquid investment vehicles.
    • Proven knowledge of registered fund structures and regulatory requirements, including 1940 Act funds, interval funds, tender-offer funds, business development companies, registered alternatives, and other vehicles designed to broaden access to private market strategies.
    • Track record leading the development, approval, launch, and commercialization of new investment products, coordinating investment, legal, compliance, operations, finance, product, technology, distribution, and client-facing stakeholders through complex execution milestones.
    • Experience engaging with boards, regulators, senior executives, risk committees, investment committees, and external partners on investment strategy, governance, valuation, liquidity, risk controls, regulatory readiness, and client impact.
    • Strong understanding of the operational, legal, compliance, tax, reporting, and technology considerations required to support private assets and alternative investments at scale in a highly regulated financial services environment.
    • Proven people leadership capability, including the ability to recruit and develop investment talent, set clear expectations, build succession depth, strengthen team operating discipline, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, sound judgment, and continuous improvement.

    Key Experiences & Ideal Profile:

The ideal candidate is a seasoned private markets and alternative investments leader with the investment credibility, enterprise judgment, and executive presence to scale a strategically important platform within a complex, highly regulated financial services firm. This individual brings both strategic vision and practical execution discipline, with a demonstrated ability to set direction, lead through ambiguity, build durable governance, and translate sophisticated investment concepts into clear decisions for executives, boards, regulators, advisors, and clients.

Key leadership attributes include sound judgment, high integrity, intellectual rigor, executive presence, strong organizational discipline, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders through credibility, clarity, and trust. The leader must be comfortable operating at the intersection of investment management, product innovation, risk governance, legal and regulatory requirements, operations, distribution, and enterprise strategy while creating alignment across teams with different priorities and accountabilities.

    • Strategic, client-focused leader who can shape Schwab's point of view on private assets and alternatives while maintaining disciplined stewardship, transparency, and risk management consistent with Schwab's values.
    • Credible investment professional with deep private markets expertise and the ability to evaluate opportunities, risks, managers, structures, valuations, liquidity considerations, and portfolio implications with rigor and independence.
    • Collaborative enterprise leader who builds trusted relationships across SAM/CSIM, Schwab Risk, Legal, Compliance, Operations, Finance, Product, Distribution, Technology, Forge Global Advisors, SIPSS, external managers, regulators, and board-level stakeholders.
    • An inclusive people leader who can elevate a specialized team, develop future leaders, reinforce accountability, and create a culture that combines intellectual rigor, prudent risk-taking, operational excellence, high engagement, and continuous learning.
    • Decisive and balanced executive who can make sound calls amid incomplete information, competing priorities, market uncertainty, regulatory complexity, and evolving client needs while maintaining appropriate escalation, transparency, and governance discipline.
    • Change leader who can bring structure to ambiguity, mobilize cross-functional teams, build confidence in new investment capabilities, and guide the organization through the operational, cultural, and governance changes required to scale private assets responsibly.
    • Cisciplined operator who can establish scalable processes, governance routines, reporting frameworks, issue escalation protocols, and decision forums to support growth in a complex and evolving investment category.
    • An executive communicator who can simplify complexity, provide balanced recommendations, and represent the platform with confidence in senior leadership meetings, committee settings, board discussions, regulatory interactions, and industry forums.
