Provincetown Independent Managing Editor The Provincetown Independent a path-breaking newspaper in one of the most ecologically and culturally complex places in the United States seeks a managing editor who shares our commitment to independent local journalism. The newspaper covers four towns at the tip of Cape Cod Massachusetts in print and online. Provincetown Truro Wellfleet and Eastham occupy a fragile environment much of it protected as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore and have a combined year-round population of about 15000 which swells to more than 100000 in summer. This presents challenges to local and regional governments and to the local economy and community life. At the same time this is a place that for generations has attracted creative people who contribute to these communities continuous renewal. Launched in 2019 as a response to corporate consolidation that has left two ghost newspapers behind the Independent has had strong community support and healthy growth and is ready to add an experienced Managing Editor to its team. Were looking for someone who has editing chops wants to be a leader at a smart committed independent local newsroom and has these qualifications • Five years of hands-on experience as a news editor at a daily or weekly publication • Strength in developmental editing and in seeing stories through from conception to final production • Exceptional copyediting skills • Leadership leanings especially a commitment to working with inexperienced reporters and helping them grow as professionals • Readiness to represent the cause of independent journalism in sustaining democracy. The leader in this job guides the development and production of weekly issues and special publications in close collaboration with the news and arts editors the production team and the publisher. The managing editor reports directly to the editor and handles these primary responsibilities • Determine weekly and longer-term publication plans and schedules • Manage the weekly storyboard and budgets for staff reporters and freelance writers artists and photographers • Assign and edit news and feature stories coach and supervise reporters and other writers and do some occasional reporting and writing • Cultivate and expand the circle of contributors and reporters • Proofread and work with editorial and production staff to maintain the papers standards and style. Compensation range is 80000 to 100000 commensurate with experience and includes competitive benefits. This role also includes the opportunity to earn equity in the company. The newspapers identity and mission are locally focused so the right candidate must be or become part of the Outer Cape Cod community including living within easy commuting distance of Provincetown. We help people find suitable housing and as of June 2026 our nonprofit partners at the Local Journalism Project will be ready to offer a year-round lease with a reasonable rent to the person in this post.
