Job Summary

The Manual Machinist is responsible for manufacturing, modifying, and repairing precision components using conventional manual machining equipment, including Bridgeport mills, engine lathes, drill presses, and other shop tools. This position requires a strong understanding of machining practices, blueprint reading, precision measurement, and the ability to produce high-quality parts that meet exact specifications. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate, modify, and repair precision components using manual machining equipment.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to determine machining requirements.
  • Measure, calculate, and verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments to ensure components meet required tolerances.
  • Select appropriate machines, tooling, and workholding methods for each job while planning the most efficient machining sequence.
  • Set up and operate manual mills, lathes, drill presses, and other machine shop equipment following industry best practices.
  • Inspect completed work to verify quality, accuracy, and compliance with specifications.
  • Perform routine maintenance on machine shop equipment and complete minor repairs as needed.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records, including part identification, quantities, locations, and status.
  • Evaluate and disposition nonconforming parts, including rework when appropriate.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced machinists and support cross-functional teams as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of manual machining experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or repair environment.
  • Proficiency operating conventional manual machining equipment, including Bridgeport mills and engine lathes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and bore gauges.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and inventory tracking.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of productivity.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a climate-controlled shop environment.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while meeting production schedules.
  • Experience working in a repair or custom fabrication environment is a plus.
