Leppert Nutmeg in Bloomfield, CT is hiring a skilled Non-CNC Manual Machinist to support the repair and refurbishment of industrial electric motors, generators, and related components. This position is ideal for a machinist with strong manual lathe experience who takes pride in precision work, especially in repair and rebuild applications.

What You'll Do

  • Operate manual machining equipment including engine lathes, horizontal lathes, knee mills, drill presses, grinders, and saws
  • Perform turning, boring, threading, drilling, tapping, and milling operations
  • Restore components to OEM specifications (sleeving IDs, skim cutting shaft ODs, re-centering, shaft repair, and keyway milling)
  • Machine new shafts and components from samples using materials such as 1045, 4140, 4340, A36 steel, bearing bronze, and 6061 aluminum
  • Support motor and generator repair, including machining, balancing, and component prep
  • Perform tool-post grinding, broaching, and commutator undercutting
  • Complete basic metallizing (metal spraying) and mid-level welding, brazing, and soldering
  • Use overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment safely
  • Hold tight tolerances (.0001") using micrometers and precision measuring tools
  • Measure TIR and indicate parts accurately in a 4-jaw chuck
  • Read blueprints and follow job specifications
  • Maintain documentation, safety standards, and a clean work environment

Experience You Bring

  • 7+ years of manual machining on horizontal engine lathes, including 4-jaw chuck work
  • 3+ years operating traditional knee mills
  • Experience with large manual lathes (10"–40" swing, 60"–120" between centers)
  • Strong background in repair machining and rebuilding components to original/OEM specs

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years as a manual machinist (non-CNC), ideally in industrial repair or motor shops
  • Associate degree in Machine Tool Technology (preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Strong knowledge of machining practices and metal behavior
  • Skilled with micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
  • Welding, brazing, and soldering experience (intermediate level)
  • Mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and dependable
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willing to work overtime when needed

Physical Requirements

  • Stand, bend, and move throughout the shift
  • Lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Strong visual acuity for precision measurements
