Manufacturing Engineer

Position Overview

The Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing methods and processes used to produce sophisticated technology products. Working under the direction of the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, this individual will support new process development, equipment installation and validation, facility/layout optimization, process characterization, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The engineer will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Production, Tool & Die, and Maintenance to ensure manufacturing processes meet cost, quality, productivity, and schedule requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Installation & Validation

  • Support installation and validation of manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop and execute documentation including:
    • URS – User Requirements Specification
    • FDS – Functional Design Specification
    • IQ – Installation Qualification
    • OQ – Operational Qualification
    • PQ – Performance Qualification
    • VRA – Validation Risk Assessment
  • Support CNC equipment installation and validation.
  • Perform cleaning validation activities, including IQ, OQ, and PQ.

Manufacturing Process Development

  • Develop, implement, and maintain manufacturing methods and processes.
  • Establish operation sequences and manufacturing methods for:
    • Parts
    • Components
    • Subassemblies
    • Final assemblies
  • Determine tooling, equipment, and process requirements for new and existing product lines.
  • Estimate manufacturing costs and establish time standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing efficiency, quality, and cost.

Facility Layout & Equipment Planning

  • Coordinate machine and equipment placement within manufacturing facilities.
  • Optimize plant layouts for productivity, efficiency, material flow, and utilization.
  • Support equipment moves, installations, and manufacturing expansions.

Capital Projects

  • Support capital equipment and facility projects.
  • Prepare financial justifications for capital expenditures.
  • Monitor project spending and budgets.
  • Coordinate with project stakeholders to ensure projects remain on schedule and within expectations.

Quality & Process Improvement

  • Investigate manufacturing issues and identify root causes.
  • Develop and implement corrective and preventative actions.
  • Provide engineering input for material disposition in partnership with Quality.
  • Support process characterization, analysis, control, and validation.
  • Apply statistical tools and Six Sigma methodologies to manufacturing processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Risk Analysis

  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop:
    • Process Maps
    • PFMEA
    • MSA
    • Other manufacturing/process risk analysis tools
  • Identify process risks and implement appropriate controls.

Engineering & Cross-Functional Support

  • Interface with:
    • Design Engineering
    • Quality Engineering
    • Production
    • Tool & Die
    • Machine Maintenance
  • Provide engineering support related to manufacturing methods, tooling, equipment, and processes.
  • Support production operations and resolve manufacturing challenges.

Manufacturing Documentation

  • Maintain manufacturing records and reporting systems.
  • Support production routers, BOMs, and engineering/manufacturing change notices.
  • Utilize systems such as SAP and/or Windchill for manufacturing documentation and production setup.

Design & Tooling

  • Support product, fixture, gauge, and tooling design.
  • Apply GD&T principles to manufacturing and engineering activities.
  • Utilize CAD tools such as AutoCAD, DraftSight, NX, or similar platforms.

Communication & Presentations

  • Create and deliver effective PowerPoint presentations.
  • Communicate technical findings, project status, process improvements, and recommendations to engineering and management.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to take new ideas from concept through implementation.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required
  • Master's degree in Engineering is a plus.

Experience

The candidate should have approximately 3–4 years of relevant experience with a BS degree.

Strong candidates should have experience with:

  • Equipment installation and validation
  • URS / FDS / IQ / OQ / PQ / VRA
  • CNC machining and validation
  • Cleaning validation
  • Manufacturing process development
  • Process characterization and validation
  • Six Sigma/statistical methodologies
  • Continuous improvement
  • Capital projects
  • Manufacturing layouts
  • SAP and/or Windchill
  • Production routers and BOMs
  • Engineering/manufacturing change notices
  • AutoCAD, DraftSight, NX, or similar CAD software
  • GD&T
  • Metal finishing processes, including bead blasting
  • Manufacturing with materials such as:
    • Titanium
    • Cobalt Chrome
    • Stainless Steel
    • Medical-grade plastics

Preferred

  • Medical device manufacturing experience
  • Experience with sophisticated/high-precision technology products
  • Experience with product, fixture, gauge, and tooling design
  • Six Sigma experience/certification
  • Capital equipment project experience
