Physical Demands: Work is normally accomplished in both a repair shop environment and on vessels. There is frequent lifting and carrying of moderately heavy parts and equipment weighing 50 pounds and heavier, often on slippery and uneven surfaces such as moving boat decks and docks. This position requires much physical effort such as pushing, pulling, reaching, walking, and standing, kneeling, bending and climbing into crawl spaces in engine compartments for sustained periods of time. Simultaneous and smooth operation of hydraulic winches and boat controls while standing on a wet and moving deck requires coordination of hands, eyes, legs, and body. Incumbent must be able to operate vessels for over 10-hour periods between harbor landings. Incumbent must be able to pass a swim proficiency test given by this office.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside on site, in all weather conditions. The incumbent also performs work inside where noise and fumes from internal combustion engines are present. The incumbent operates vessels in all weather conditions. The incumbent may be exposed to fluids such as gasoline, diesel, battery acids and hydraulic fluids which may irritate the skin. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and burns. The employee is required to wear items of protective clothing and equipment such as safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, head protection, protective gloves, protective apron, face shield, flotation devices, goggles, and/or respirator and other items of protective equipment furnished by the employer.
