Marine Mechanic – Shipyard (Vessel Systems & Machinery)

Overview
This role involves hands-on mechanical work on vessels and in a shipyard environment supporting the installation, maintenance, and repair of marine propulsion systems and heavy machinery. Work includes precision alignment, equipment installation, and troubleshooting mechanical systems to OEM and engineering standards.
This is a skilled trade position working on complex vessel systems in a fast-paced marine repair and construction environment in Portland.
What You'll Do
Install, remove, and service marine propulsion and auxiliary machinery
Align pumps, motors, gearboxes, shafts, and rotating equipment
Perform rigging, lifting, and positioning of heavy components
Read and work from schematics, blueprints, and OEM technical manuals
Support shafting, rudder, and propeller installation and removal
Work with shrink-fit and expansion-fit components using controlled heating or liquid nitrogen methods
Assemble and install mechanical systems using hand and power tools
Ensure all work meets safety and quality standards
Communicate with supervisors and team members to resolve mechanical issues
What We're Looking For
Strong mechanical background in marine, industrial, or heavy equipment environments
Experience with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators)
Ability to align rotating equipment such as pumps, motors, and shafts
Comfortable reading technical drawings and OEM installation instructions
Experience with rigging, lifting, and safe handling of heavy components
Strong troubleshooting ability and attention to detail
Physically capable of lifting up to 75 lbs
Willingness to work at heights and in confined spaces
Reliable, team-oriented, and safety-focused
Preferred Experience
Shipyard, marine repair, or vessel maintenance background
Industrial maintenance or heavy mechanical assembly experience
Exposure to propulsion systems, drivetrain alignment, or hydraulic systems
Compensation & Schedule
$26–$32/hour depending on experience
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Approximately 50 hours per week with overtime opportunities
Benefits and PTO after 3 months
