Job Description Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

Perform experimental and developmental work in support of major research programs. Responsible for the planning, operation, and management of significant experimental/research programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Use established analytical, experimental and investigative methods and techniques, using either gas or liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, with minor modifications and adaptations.

Collect, process, monitor and analyze samples and/or data linked to trace organic compounds in water, sediment/soil, biota and air.

Maintain laboratory and research instruments for conformance with research priorities and safety concerns.

Responsible for maintenance of good laboratory practices and safety.

Prepare and publish manuscripts containing results of research efforts.

Develop experimental procedures and techniques for resolution of unique scientific/research problems in the field of pollutant sampling and detection in the field.

Assist in supervisory and administrative duties related to research programs.

Provide guidance and assistance to graduate students and supervise undergraduate research assistants.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in fieldwork for projects within lab with focuses other than pollutant sampling.

Perform additional duties as required.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Equipment: Gas or liquid chromatography; mass spectrometer; GC-ECD, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS. GC-Q-ToF; HPLC-MS/MS, UPLC-Q-ToF; Personal computers, printers, external hard drives. Software: Word processing, database management, spreadsheet, instrument operating software.

Required Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Chemical Oceanography, Chemistry or related field.

  2. Minimum two years of relevant research support experience (i.e., field sampling; laboratory support; chemical analysis).

  3. Demonstrated experience in an area of specialization (i.e., environmental trace organic sample analysis).

  4. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

  5. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

  6. Demonstrated organizational skills.

  7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

  8. Must be able to work at sea, as needed.

9.. Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED:

  1. Demonstrated experience in field-based sampling platforms; and demonstrated experience in LC-MS/MS or GC-MS instrument operation and maintenance.
