Description

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

Employees in positions allocated to this classification are responsible for the development and implementation of marketing and communication tactics that strengthen the university brand and/or programs, and enhance fundraising and development efforts including, but not limited to: marketing analyzation, coordination of marketing events, website design and management, social media management, and creating digital and print materials.

Examples of Duties

Researches and gathers information through interviews (in person, phone, email, or virtual) regarding university research, faculty and staff, students, programs, policies, events, alumni, and donors to develop compelling stories and communications.

Plans, compiles, verifies, writes, edits, and publishes informational and promotional content across multiple platforms, including websites, email marketing, social media, text messaging, interactive digital displays, newsletters, donor proposals, news releases, articles, and other marketing materials.

Creates, schedules, and manages content for interactive digital displays and digital signage systems, ensuring content is accurate, visually engaging, current, and aligned with university and Foundation priorities.

Plans, coordinates, and executes digital communication and public information campaigns, identifying appropriate audiences, communication channels, and distribution strategies to support fundraising, alumni engagement, and university initiatives.

Provides communications expertise and project support to university staff in planning, developing, and managing strategic communication initiatives, marketing campaigns, and storytelling projects, including video and multimedia content.

Establishes and maintains effective relationships with media representatives, campus partners, alumni, donors, and other stakeholders to support strategic communications and public relations efforts.

Assists in planning and coordinating press conferences, media interviews, photo sessions, video productions, and other promotional or public information events.

Reviews and edits communication materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, accessibility, and compliance with university brand, editorial, and style guidelines.

Supports emergency and crisis communications through content development and implementation of communication protocols.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, public relations, or a closely related field.*

  2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in public relations, journalism, digital communications, or closely related.*

Note: Masters Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
