Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as STEM Engagement and Communication Specialist for the University of Hawai`i STEM Pre-Academy (SPA), working closely with the Director to oversee communication, marketing, and engagement strategies to support the programs mission and goals.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic communications plan to reach SPA audiences, including PK-12 educators, university faculty and staff, community partners, and the general public, with aligned goals and metrics.
  • Creates multimedia content (including newsletters, websites, videos, webinars, news releases, reports, outreach events, and social media) for informational, technical, and educational purposes; ensures digital accessibility and data hygiene across platforms.
  • Leads the creation of program reports, including data collection, aggregation, and analysis; and report writing, formatting, editing, and distribution.
  • Plans and coordinates events, such as teacher professional development workshops, meetings, and outreach opportunities.
  • Manages program branding, including audience research, brand strategy, visual identity, style guidelines, and publication templates.
  • Identifies and monitors resource needs for communication and marketing initiatives, including researching cost-effective solutions, and collaborating with the Director and central fiscal staff to ensure adherence to UH procurement guidelines.
  • Develops working knowledge of all aspects of the STEM Pre-Academy program in order to complete cross-functional projects and ensure alignment of work products to the SPA strategic plan.
  • Assists with the development and function of the lending library of STEM equipment, with an emphasis on effectively communicating its function and promoting its usage.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and skills through continuing education, certification courses, professional organizations, workshops, conferences, or other training.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Professional Work Experience:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Business, Business Administration, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Graphic Design, English, or related field and 3 years of professional experience with primary responsibilities in communications, marketing, and/or media production; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of communications, marketing, media production, and/or education, demonstrated by knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts and terminology.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with communications, marketing, media production, and/or education.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems that commonly occur in the area of communications, marketing, media production, and/or education through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and visually in a variety of formats and modalities for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and use standard office productivity suites (Google Suite, Microsoft Office) for word processing and basic data management and analysis, shared productivity tools (Google Calendar, Basecamp), creative design applications (Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva), and website builders and content management systems (WordPress or similar) or similar applications for the purposes of communication, marketing, and project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute projects, organize workflows, and manage time effectively on multiple simultaneous projects.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to plan and facilitate events, such as workshops, outreach tabling, or meetings.
  • Availability to periodically work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to serve teacher and program needs.
  • Ability to travel independently throughout the state, with occasional overnight or out of state travel.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Masters degree from an accredited university in a STEM field, STEM Education, Business, Business Administration, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Graphic Design, English, or related field.
  • Experience in STEM communication or education, demonstrated by knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts and terminology. STEM knowledge may include a focus or concentration in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics as an individual discipline, but should include an awareness of all four areas and of integrated STEM in a K¿12 context.
  • Experience working or communicating with the primary audiences of STEM Pre-Academy, including PK-12 classroom teachers and university researchers in STEM fields.
  • Familiarity with State of Hawai`i Department of Education STEM programs and requirements, including content standards for science and engineering (NGSS), mathematics (Common Core), and computer science.
  • Familiarity with standard editorial style guides, project-specific style guides, or University of Hawai`i brand communication policies.
  • Awareness of and engagement with research and innovation initiatives at the University of Hawai`i, integrating local advancements into STEM education.
  • Possession of a current valid Hawai`i Drivers License.
