Massage Therapist

Under the supervision of leadership and upon physician referral, this role delivers massage therapy services to patients at City of Hope with a primary focus on direct patient care. The licensed massage therapist works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team that may include the Integrative Medicine Medical Director, nurse practitioners, social workers, physical therapists, psychiatrists, pain management and palliative care providers, and clinical researchers.
The therapist is responsible for maintaining medically safe practices, adhering to infection control standards, and ensuring proper upkeep of massage supplies and equipment. Additional duties include assisting patients with required documentation, such as consent forms, screening tools, and program evaluations. The individual in this role is expected to fully comply with all City of Hope policies, procedures, and organizational mission.
As a successful candidate, you will:
- Provides clinical expertise in implementing delivery of inpatient and outpatient massage services to COH oncology patient population.
- Performs massage therapy to control pain, reduce symptoms, and promote relaxation for clients.
- Properly positions and drapes patients.
- Evaluate and document patient services rendered, interfacing across multi-modality clinical care and electronic medical record.
- Demonstrates the ability to discuss the scientific basis and commonly used techniques for massage therapy.
- Keeps up to date with the latest research or workshops in the use of massage therapy, especially in the cancer setting.
- Ensures a safe environment, maintains equipment and supplies in a clean, operable, and safe manner, and follows institutional infection control policies.
- Reports status of supplies/inventory to designated personnel.
- Verifies the physicians clearance orders for massage.
- Reviews chart for contraindications/precautions for treatment and if present, report to physician/nurse before procedure.
- Develops a plan of care with patient for each visit and for long-term goals.
- Documents date/time of treatment, pertinent information, and patient response in the medical records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Your qualifications should include:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of a licensed school of massage
- 3-5 years of experience working as a massage therapist are required.
- Experience with adult cancer patients and/or chronically ill patients preferred.
- California Massage Therapist licensure required through the Department of Professional Licensure
- BLS through the American Heart Association
