Job Summary

The County of San Diegos Department of General Services Fleet Management Division has current openings for Master Fleet Technician!

Interviews will take place the week of July 22nd, 2026, and JOB OFFERs will be made soon after interviews are complete.

FUTURE SALARY INCREASES

June 2026 - 4.50% increase to base pay (3% Across-the-Board + 1.50% Market Adjustment)

June 2027 - 4.40% increase to base pay (2.90% Across-the- Board + 1.50% Market Adjustment)

The Department of General Services (DGS) is responsible for overall management of all County vehicles, including acquisition, electrification, disposal, inventory, regulatory compliance, maintenance and fueling.

The Fleet Services Division owns and operates one of the largest government vehicle fleets in the State of California consisting of over 4,500 vehicles and equipment. Fleet Services consists of Acquisitions, Electrification, Maintenance, and Contracts & Compliance. There are eight maintenance locations, seven mobile maintenance units, 30 fuel sites and 125 contracts in place for parts, service, and repairs.

Master Fleet Technicians perform a wide variety of vehicle and equipment inspections, preventive maintenance work, and repairs. This includes mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical maintenance and repairs to vehicles, buses, fire apparatus, light and heavy-duty trucks, and construction and industrial equipment.

This recruitment will be used to fill positions located throughout San Diego County with current vacancies in San Marcos, Kearny Mesa, and Spring Valley (Fire apparatus/equipment background required). Hiring Process and Timeline:

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews.

Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.

  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Two (2) years of experience as a Fleet Technician in the County of San Diego; OR,

  2. High School diploma, GED, or certificate from a Vocational School in automotive technology or truck technology; AND four (4) years of experience servicing vehicles and equipment in a commercial, industrial, or governmental agency; OR,

  3. Five (5) years of experience as a Medium/Heavy Truck Technician.

Notes:

  • A/C and Refrigerant licenses are required at time of appointment, and must be maintained throughout employment in this class.
  • A valid California Class C drivers license is required at the time of appointment.
  • A valid California Class A or B drivers license must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment, and maintained throughout employment in this class, for technicians who perform public road testing on equipment requiring an A or B drivers license to operate on public roads. A valid California Class B drivers license with air brake endorsement may be required based on the vehicles assigned for service and repair.
  • When not required for a specific assignment, possession of a valid California Class A or B drivers license is highly desirable.
  • May be required to possess and maintain a hazardous materials endorsement before driving a vehicle used to transport hazardous materials as defined in Title 49, CFR, §383.5.
  • May be required to possess and maintain a Government Fleet Program Smog Inspectors License from the California Bureau of Automotive Repair

Certifications

Must possess five (5) of the listed ASE certifications for an Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician within twelve (12) months from the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. May be required to possess and maintain Certified Fire Mechanic status. Highly desirable are ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certifications.
