DURATION: 6 Months

Position Summary:
The Material Handling Manager is responsible for overseeing the receiving, storage, movement, and distribution of raw materials, pipe, valves, fittings, metal stock, and finished goods throughout the facility. This role ensures efficient, safe, and accurate flow of materials from receiving dock to production floor to shipping, supporting on-time delivery for industrial plumbing, pipe, valve, metal fabrication, and construction operations. Key Responsibilities:
  • Operations & Material Flow

    • Optimize warehouse layout and storage systems for pipe, valves, fittings, structural steel, and raw metal stock (racking, cantilever systems, pipe cradles, yard storage)
    • Coordinate material flow between receiving, fabrication/production, and shipping to minimize bottlenecks and downtime
    • Manage inventory accuracy through cycle counts, reconciliation, and ERP/WMS system updates
    • Oversee loading/unloading of trucks, flatbeds, and containers, including oversized and overweight pipe and steel shipments
  • Team Leadership
    • Supervise, schedule, and develop material handlers and warehouse staff
    • Conduct training on safe lifting and equipment operation specific to heavy pipe, valves, and metal products
    • Set performance expectations, conduct evaluations, and manage team development
    • Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Equipment & Facility Management
    • Oversee maintenance and inspection schedules for pipe threading/handling equipment and other material handling machinery
    • Manage relationships with equipment vendors and coordinate repairs or replacements
    • Ensure yard and warehouse storage areas remain organized, labeled, and operating smoothly
  • Planning & Process Improvement
    • Partner with Purchasing, Production, and Shipping to forecast material needs and prevent shortages or overstock
    • Identify and implement process improvements (lean/5S principles) to reduce handling time, damage, and waste
    • Track and report key performance indicators: inventory accuracy, on-time delivery, damage/loss rates, and labor productivity
    • Support ERP/WMS implementation and optimization efforts

Qualifications Required:
  • 5+ years of experience in material handling, warehouse, or logistics management, ideally in industrial, metal fabrication, plumbing, or construction supply environments
  • 2+ years of supervisory/management experience
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced capabilities with pivot tables, data analysis, and reporting
  • Working knowledge of pipe, valve, and metal product handling (weight distribution and dimensional storage challenges)
  • Proficiency with inventory/warehouse management systems (WMS) and ERP software
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and team leadership skills
  • Bachelor s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Industrial Operations, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with lean manufacturing or 5S methodologies
  • Background in pipe fabrication, valve distribution, or steel service center operations
