What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Matieral Lab Technician to join our dynamic team, focusing on the testing and analysis of materials used in our products. This role is critical in ensuring the quality and performance of our cutting-edge materials.
What You'll Do
- Perform routine and advanced testing on materials, including tensile, hardness, compression, electrical, and other required material testing methods
- Operate and maintain testing equipment such as universal testing machines, hardness testers, profilometers, and electrical testing devices
- Prepare and test material samples using machine shop equipment, including metallographic cutters, angle grinders, and other hand tools
- Interpret test data, create detailed reports, and provide insightful conclusions to support decision-making within the quality operations team
- Conduct regular preventative maintenance, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate with external vendors for complex repairs
- Maintain inventory of consumable supplies and materials, ensuring lab cleanliness and organization through 5S practices and hygiene standards
- Refine testing procedures, draft SOP revisions, and ensure the lab is stocked with necessary supplies for operational needs
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Material Science, Chemistry, or a relevant field, with at least 2 years of experience in material testing and analysis or equivalent experience
- Experience with material testing methods, including tensile, hardness, compression, and electrical testing
- Machine shop experience, including operating a metallographic cutter and angle grinder
- Ability to quickly learn Tesla's in-house testing methods and operate specialized equipment
- Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently and collaboratively in a project-focused environment, with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experience with internal quality systems and laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
- Fluency in English (written and verbal) for effective team communication and documentation, with the ability to wear PPE, including PAPR (powered air purifying respirator)
