Position Summary

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and gain hands-on experience in engineering, material testing, and construction? We're seeking a hardworking and motivated individual to join our Material Testing Services team as a Material Testing Technician.

Based in Anchorage or Palmer, you'll work under the direction of the Senior Materials Technician to perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials, ensuring compliance with standard testing procedures. Testing will be conducted at construction sites and in a controlled laboratory environment. You'll be trained in HDL's state-of-the-art Palmer laboratory and work on projects throughout Alaska, with most activity concentrated in Anchorage, the Mat-Su Borough, and the Kenai Peninsula. Expect long hours, overtime, and some weekends during the busy construction season - this role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment

Required Job Qualification:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted

Desired Job Qualifications:

  • Experience in construction material testing, lab testing, or construction administration
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness and ability to travel to remote areas in Alaska via small aircraft, boats, or other regional transportation
  • Relevant certifications (WAQTC, ACI, Troxler, NICET, ICC, or Municipality of Anchorage Special Inspector)
  • Certificate or AAS in civil engineering, construction technology, or related field.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform field and lab testing of materials such as soil, concrete, aggregate, and asphalt, ensuring compliance with applicable standards.
  • Prepare detailed reports and communicate results effectively.
  • Exercise sound judgment and independence in determining appropriate actions.
  • Collaborate professionally with coworkers, clients, contractors, and the public.
  • Solve technical challenges using established methodologies.
  • Maintain testing equipment and tools.
  • Provide support to technicians, inspectors, and engineers.
  • Take on additional duties as needed.

Work Environment

This role combines fieldwork, laboratory work, and travel. Fieldwork often involves working near busy roadways, intersections, and construction zones. You'll need to kneel, crouch, and lift up to 75 pounds unassisted. Much of this job is done outside where inclement weather may be encountered-it's all part of the adventure!
