PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:   

Responsible for performing unskilled tasks, custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure the efficient operation of the Public Works materials yard.     

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

  • Operates backhoe and front-end loader and other light construction equipment.
  • Operates push mower, riding lawn mower and weed trimmer.
  • Loads and issues materials, including asphalt, gravel, and drainage pipe into dump trucks.
  • Maintain materials and put together orders and communicate needs to Street Supervisor.
  • Operate brine maker.
  • Organize and inventory catch basins, manholes lids, and another inventory stored at the material yard.
  • Operates hand and power tools and performs light building maintenance.
  • Maintains building and material yard; picks up trash and debris, cleans and maintains building space.
  • Receives incoming materials, checks count against packing slips or orders, puts away incoming materials.
  • Notifies supervisor when inventories need to be replenished. 
  • Responsible for inventory control and organization, checking in and checking out miscellaneous equipment.
  • Maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Operates cutting and welding equipment.
  • Performs general manual labor as required.
  • Performs other work as necessary and or as assigned.
  • Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Material Yard Operator reports directly to the Streets Superintendent. 

The Material Yard Operator does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience:  Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and two (2) years of experience as a trades helper or maintenance laborer in any of the construction and maintenance trades, including one year of experience in the operation of trucks and light to medium construction equipment. 

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:  Good knowledge of manual labor work practices, methods, tools and materials of varied semiskilled general maintenance work; and good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.  Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to read and write;  ability to use various types of mechanical tools and equipment; ability to operate various types of automotive and power equipment; and the ability to courteously and tactfully communicate with fellow workers, supervisors, other members of the organization, and the public in giving and receiving information.  Skill in the operation of light to heavy automotive equipment and in the use of pertinent tools and power equipment.

Physical Requirements:  The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  On a case-by-case basis, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity will be needed enough to use a key board and telephone.  Occasional sitting and standing is required.  Frequent lifting and carrying of objects up to sixty (60) pounds.  Occasional lifting and carrying of objects weighing over sixty (60) pounds.  Occasional reaching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, twisting, handling and repetitive movements.  Vision, speech, and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.  Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential.     Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates:  Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license required.  Ability to obtain and maintain an Oklahoma Class B CDL is required within nine (9) months of employment.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:    Work in this classification is both indoors and outdoors.  Will travel to other City locations as required. 

Notice:  This classification is a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws.  As a “safety sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing.  Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening.  Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
