CTG is seeking a Materials Engineer I to support laboratory analysis and materials characterization activities within a glass research and manufacturing environment. This role combines hands-on laboratory work with scientific principles to support engineers and scientists through devitrification testing, microscopy analysis, and sample preparation. The successful candidate will spend significant time working with optical microscopy and analytical instrumentation while supporting liquidus and devitrification testing. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career materials professional with strong technical aptitude and an interest in laboratory-based research and analysis. Type: Contract Job Title: Materials Engineer I Location: Corning, NY Candidates must be able to commute and work onsite in Corning, NY Pay Rate: Based on experience Work Hours: M-F 8am-5pm Education: Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Materials Science, or related scientific field required Key Responsibilities: • Perform optical microscopy analysis, including stereomicroscopy and polarized light microscopy, to evaluate glass samples. • Conduct petrographic analysis to identify crystalline phases and document findings. • Prepare glass and refractory samples through cutting, mounting, epoxying, grinding, and polishing. • Support analytical testing using SEM/EDX and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). • Analyze and image prepared samples while maintaining accurate laboratory documentation. • Compile data and prepare reports for engineering and scientific teams. • Manage sample tracking, workload prioritization, and turnaround timelines. • Support laboratory operations, equipment readiness, and supply management. Required Qualifications: • 0-3 years of experience in a laboratory, materials analysis, or related technical environment. • Hands-on optical microscopy experience preferred. • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and accuracy. • Ability to independently perform work using established procedures. • Ability to collaborate with scientists and engineers to resolve technical challenges. • Ability to lift 10-25 lbs. Preferred Skills: • Experience with SEM/EDX, XRD, microprobe, ICP-MS, or other analytical laboratory equipment. • Experience with sample preparation techniques including mounting, polishing, and grinding. • Knowledge of glass materials, ceramics, or refractories. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel. • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities. Ideal Candidate: • Detail-oriented with a curious, analytical mindset. • Comfortable working extensively with microscopes and laboratory equipment. • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while receiving guidance from experienced technical staff. • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
