POSITION TITLE: Materials Handler, Facility Operations

REPORTING LOCATION: Rockville, MD

REPORTS TO: Manager, Facility Operations

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The Materials Handler supports research operations by receiving, inspecting, documenting, storing, and distributing laboratory supplies, research materials, biological specimens, and facility inventory while maintaining compliance with GLP/GCLP standards, company procedures, and applicable safety regulations. This role ensures inventory accuracy, timely material availability, and excellent internal customer service to support scientific operations.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRODUCTIVITY EXPECTATIONS:

  • Receive, inspect, verify, document, and distribute incoming laboratory supplies, equipment, chemicals, biological materials and research specimens.
  • Verify packing slips, purchase orders, shipping documentation, and report discrepancies or damages.
  • Record receipts in inventory/procurement systems and notify end users promptly.
  • Store materials appropriately, including ambient, refrigerated, frozen, hazardous, flammable, and controlled-access inventory.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and perform routine cycle counts and physical inventories.
  • Monitor stock levels and communicate replenishment needs.
  • Receive, document, and store research samples in accordance with GCLP/GLP requirements and SOPs.
  • Maintain clean, organized receiving, storage, and supply areas using 5S and Lean principles.
  • Safely handle hazardous chemicals and biological materials in accordance with OSHA and company procedures.
  • Support internal shipments, movement of laboratory equipment, and other facility logistics activities.
  • Participate in process improvements and assist with SOP updates as assigned.
  • Support regulatory inspections and audits by maintaining complete and accurate documentation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize multiple requests in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Knowledge of inventory control and documentation practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic inventory systems.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow SOPs and safety procedures.
  • Basic mathematical skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in warehouse, laboratory receiving, inventory management, logistics, or material handling.
  • Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, CRO, or regulated laboratory environments preferred.
  • Experience with GLP, GCLP, GMP, ERP, or barcode inventory systems preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to sit and use hands to finger, handle and feel.
  • Must be able to lift and move packages weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time using a computer in a typical office environment in a multi-level facility
  • Some activities require repetitive motion and reaching, pulling or pushing.
  • In carrying out the duties of the job there will be frequent exposure to fumes and chemical hazards.
  • Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue
