Summary

The San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) is currently recruiting for a full time Materials Handler position, located in the Warehouse area of Logistics Service for the San Francisco Division and supported catchment area. The position performs warehouse work while handling or overseeing one or more product lines, a segment of a large warehouse, or may serve as the senior employee in a smaller warehouse or supply facility.

Duties

Help

The Materials Handler has responsibility for storage andspace handling in accordance with VA regulations for a specific commodity or equipment group such as general supplies, construction materials, medical supplies, and high value items. The incumbent works on own initiative to consolidate materials and provide maximum space utilization and protection of materials. The work requires an in-depth knowledge of the overall warehousing plan, documentation requirements, and accepted warehousing methods, procedures, and techniques. The employee must have a thorough knowledge of the physical distribution functions of a warehouse such as receiving, storing, issuing, and preserving.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertakes the full spectrum of warehouse functions with responsibility for laying out storage space, establishing item locations, determining organization and arrangement of stock and identifying high and low usage items according to VA regulations and procedures.
  • Works on own initiative to consolidate materials and provide maximum space utilization and protection of materials.
  • Coordinates incoming and outgoing shipments and placement of materials on the docking area, which may require scheduling personnel to facilitate movement of materials in accordance with priorities, scheduling requirements and space allocations.
  • Receives, stores and moves hazardous and toxic materials and substances, such as certain types of chemicals or radioactive materials, in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements.
  • May serve as a senior member of a warehouse project team of materials handlers involved in, special projects, such as conversion of the warehouse from a manual to an automated system, relocating a major commodity or equipment group, or setting up a new commodity group area.
Must possess a valid Driver's License or Commercial Driver's License

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid, state Driver's License or Commercial Driver's License (CDL). (Do not provide copy, we cannot accept pictures. Driver's License will be verified during the interview process.)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work involves considerable walking, pushing, and pulling a variety of carts and materials handling equipment. Works offloading and loading trucks, lifting products on and off-shelves, handling boxes frequently weighing over 40 pounds. Will frequently handle equipment, furniture, and materials of an awkward and heavier nature in excess of 100 pounds. These items are typically handled using specialized equipment and/or assistance of coworkers. Required to work in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles and warehouses that may be hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. Will be required to work outdoors, on docks, making deliveries in all types of weather conditions during all seasons. Hazardous materials may be encounter in daily work activities.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
