Materials Handler
Performs a variety of physical and administrative duties related to shipping, receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing and delivering a variety of materials, equipment and supplies. Performs essential functions of operating Mail Room.
Essential Duties:
- Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks or dollies to move stock or reorganize storage.
- Participates in routing, counting and inspecting items while loading and unloading trucks; delivers and returns items.
- Transports valuable technology and lab equipment, laboratory supplies, office supplies, furniture and hazardous materials to customers; secures cargo properly and safely with weight evenly distributed.
- Utilizes computerized or automated systems to accomplish tasks.
- Performs vehicle inspection as required by Federal and Arizona State Law; ensures proper documentation and package marking with appropriate placards when moving hazardous materials.
- Determines method of shipment utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes and rates; prepares materials for shipping by weighing, packaging and stamping; prepares necessary shipping forms such as bills of lading.
- Participates in ordering or purchasing standard stock items, recommending additions or deletions to standard stock items or ordering replenishments within established procedures and limits.
- Performs Mail Room functions of receiving packages and mail. Use of internal tracking software.
- Customer service role of retrieving packages/mail to distribute to customers.
- Offloads freight from multiple sized vehicles, inspects delivered items for damage, verifies all delivered items match the bill of lading.
- Receives and sorts all incoming mail, packages and shipments. Completes delivery to destination.
- Prepares University's bulk mailings. Inserts, addresses, affixes postages and delivers large mailings for university departments.
- Picks up, sorts, repurposes and dispositions a variety of excess university items to and from campus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge and experience in operating software applications in a warehouse setting.
- Skills and experience in safely lifting heavy packages and equipment.
- Skills and experience in safely operating a forklift.
- Skills in professional verbal and written communication.
- Skills and experience in safely operating a vehicle in congested areas.
Working Environment:
- Warehouse setting with a combination of working indoors and outdoors delivering and picking up items from campus.
- Mailroom setting working on sorting mail and packages and distributing to customers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- One year of shipping/receiving and/or warehouse work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
- Employee is required to possess a Class D Driver's license throughout employment. Some positions may require a certification in compliance with OHSA to operate a forklift.
Desired Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience working in a fast pace warehouse environment.
- Experience in inventory management such as putting away, replenishment and cycle counting.
