The aim of Montessori education is to foster competent, responsible, adaptive scholars who are lifelong learners and problem solvers. Montessori classrooms are equipped with a diverse set of materials, which are designed to foster physical, intellectual, creative, and social independence. Learning occurs in an inquiring, cooperative, nurturing atmosphere, where students increase their own knowledge through self-initiated experiences under the guidance of trained adults.
The Opportunity:
The Tobin Montessori School seeks a talented, energetic, and flexible educator to join us as a part-time Mathematics Interventionist. This position is responsible for working with grade level teams to support classroom instruction and targeted math support. The Mathematics Interventionist is a key team member in the school mathematics team, ensuring that students are provided differentiated and targeted math supports.
Key Responsibilities:
- Skillfully support student learning of Gr. 1-5 Mathematics content, Montessori Math Curriculum and practice standards.
- Empower a diverse group of learners through individualized and small group math instruction, guided by district curriculum maps and using research-based resources recommended by the mathematics department and informed by the data.
- Identify unique student needs and collaborate with team members to effectively address those needs and improve instructional practice.
- Guide students in using mathematics software and other technology to support instruction, when appropriate.
- Incorporate a variety of assessment tools and strategies in order to inform and modify instruction, as well as target intervention and enrichment needs.
- Participate in team meetings with grade level colleagues as assigned.
- Participate in district-wide Interventionist meetings to collaborate and engage in professional learning.
- Participate in school and department meetings.
- Partner with families to include them in each student's learning and development, guided by a profound understanding of the importance of this connection.
- Support Cambridge Public Schools Strategic Objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Math Interventionist you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
- Mathematics teaching experience in the elementary grades with a proven track record of promoting high achievement in the classroom.
- Experience differentiating math instruction for a range of learners, using techniques such as visual models, student discourse and opportunities to explain reasoning, instructional routines such as number talks, open-ended problems with multiple solution paths, and strategies for increasing engagement.
- Experience writing lesson plans with clear, attainable learning goals and aligned activities.
- Experience using a range of assessments to analyze student learning to inform instruction.
- Understanding of the developmental needs of elementary learners and strategies to meet those needs through the curriculum.
- Ability to identify and build on students' strengths and interests in order to support the development of a growth mindset in math learners.
- Experience building computational fluency through conceptual understanding
- Strong classroom management skills.
- Experience leading instruction in urban school settings.
- Strong knowledge of Common Core/MA Curriculum Framework for Mathematics (Content and Practice Standards)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff, student body and community.
- Strong understanding of the Massachusetts Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
- Strong work ethic, alongside a commitment to doing whatever it takes for students to excel; instructional flexibility in order to meet students' needs using effective strategies
- Ability to be reflective and open to feedback.
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's in Education strongly preferred.
- Massachusetts Teacher Certification in Mathematics 1-6.
