JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Bus Operator
LOCATION: Assigned Route
DIVISION: Support Services
DEPARTMENT (FUNCTIONAL AREA): Transportation
RESPONSIBILITY OR PURPOSE (NARRATIVE): Operate a school bus in the
safest, most efficient manner for the transport of school age children to and from
assigned educational facilities.
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Supervisor of Safety and Transportation
REGULAR DUTIES (LIST IN GENERAL, MAJOR FUNCTIONS):
Transports children to and from school safely on an assigned bus.
Reports mechanical malfunctions by stating problem on proper form and
submit to bus garage for repair-keep record of all problems and corrections
having a signed work form release of bus.
Maintains full and complete compliance with the responsibilities and duties
set forth by the West Virginia Department of Education and outlined in West
Virginia School Transportation Regulations, 1978 Revised Edition, Second
Printing, 1980.
Prepares all required state and county reports.
Maintains with the Supervisor of Transportation's office an accurate, up-to-
date route schedule, including irregular assignments.
Participates in irregular route assignment as necessary.
Promotes daily cost conscious measures in the operation of school buses and
equipment on regular and irregular assigned routes.

Seek information located on each school bus regarding Individualized
Education Plans (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), 504 Plans and/or
Health Care Plans for the students who ride the bus. This should be done
daily to seek any changes or any new information on the students who ride
the bus.
Educate yourself on the above mentioned plans in #7 with student
modifications and accommodations and implement these plans as necessary.
10.Questions about IEPs, BIPs shall be directed immediately to the Special
Education Department, Principal or Supervisor Safety and Transportation for
clarification.
11.Questions about 504's and Health Care Plans shall be directed immediately
to the Coordinator of Pupil Services, Principal or Supervisor Safety and
Transportation for clarification.
12.Adheres to all Mercer County Schools and West Virginia Department of
Education Policies and Procedures.
13.Performs other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
SPECIAL OR OCCASIONAL (COLLATERAL) DUTIES:
Curricular and extra-curricular activity trips.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
School bus, flag, flare, first aid kit, broom, axe, chains, water hose sprayer, wheelchair
lefts, wheelchairs, equipment may be manual or automatic, powered or unpowered.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Contingent upon weather and road conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (STATE EDUCATION, TRANING AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED):
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Full and complete compliance with the qualification set forth by the West
Virginia Department of Education and outlined in West Virginia School
Transportation Regulations, 1978 Revised Edition, Second Printing 1980.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Treat all children equally.
Refresher course in first aid every year (instead of 3 nights every 3 years)
Must satisfactorily pass a WV and FBI background checks and pass drug
test.
Must satisfactorily pass a physical capabilities test.
