The Meal Driver - Part-Time Position is Grant Funded
The City of Norwalk is seeking an experienced meal driver to fill a vacancy in the Social Services Department. Under moderate supervision, the meal driver will conduct vehicle safety inspections, account for and load meals and beverages, drive to assigned routes, and deliver meals and beverages. The driver will also maintain delivery inspection records and perform related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties
Depending on assignment, essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Deliver meals to homebound seniors according to established route, schedule and procedures.
Report changes in the status of homebound meal participants to designated program staff.
Conduct daily vehicle inspection and promptly report any deficiencies.
Maintain vehicle in clean and neat condition at all times.
Receive and inspect food from caterer.
Monitor temperatures of food and equipment.
Deliver the food in a manner consistent with the Los Angeles County Health Department regulations.
Clean and sanitize all food contact surfaces.
Collect donations in a confidential manner.
Direct elderly participants to other resources they may be needed for daily living.
Complete and submit all paperwork requirements by The City of Norwalk Daily Nutrition Program in a timely manner.
Perform six-month assessments on assigned caseload/clients.
Qualification Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: policies, procedures and goals of the City of Norwalk and the department; good sanitary cleaning practices in the kitchen; sanitary food service practices in the kitchen; principles and practices of effective customer service.
Skills in: the safe and proper operation of food handling, maintain records and supplies.
Ability to: communicate effectively with senior citizens of diverse background; relate sensitively and effectively to elderly persons of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; conduct daily vehicle inspections and prepare accurate records and required reports; use time effectively while maintaining a helpful and courteous attitude toward the public and co-workers; verbally communicate in meetings; and cooperate with others in the provision of services, which are highly satisfactory to participants, funding sources and participating agencies.
Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma and/or minimum of one (1) year experience in performing the duties in one or more of the areas listed above.
Special Requirements
A valid Class C California Driver License; proof of, safe driving record for at least the past five years. Bilingual English/Spanish is desirable. Certified Safe Food Handler (successful completion of the ServSafe examination).

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and smell.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

BENEFITS FOR HOURLY/AT-WILL/PART-TIME EMPLOYEES
Terms of Employment: All employees hired as Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time are employed "at-will" throughout the term of their employment with the City. Consequently, the services of a Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time employee can be discontinued at anytime without cause, regardless of the number of hours worked for the City by the employee.
Retirement: Membership in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) is required. The employee pays the 7.5% retirement contribution.

Paid Holidays: After 3,000 hours of employment, an hourly employee is entitled to six hours pay for specified holidays designated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Vacation Leave: After 3,000 hours of employment, vacation leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.
Sick Leave: Beginning on the 30th day of employment with the City, employee will accrue sick leave at the rate of .033 hours for each hour of straight time worked. No sick leave shall be taken until the 90th day of employment. After 3,000 hours of employment, sick leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.
Medical Plan: Eligibility for medical coverage is determined using the Affordable Care Act guidelines. Employees may also qualify after 3,000 hours of employment.
Voluntary Insurance Plans: Optional Short Term Disability, Hospitalization, Accident and Cancer insurance policies are available at the employees cost.
