Job Summary
A leading food distribution company is seeking experienced Meat Cutters for its Vernon, CA facility. This is a temporary-to-hire position; per union contract, candidates will be converted to permanent employees after 30 days of successful performance. This role involves cutting and processing custom meat orders and standard inventory items in a fast-paced production environment.
Contract Duration: Temporary-to-hire (conversion after 30 days)
Schedule: Training period is 2 weeks on 1st shift (6:00 AM 2:30 PM); regular schedule transitions to 2nd shift (2:30 PM 11:00 PM), 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week
Location: Vernon, CA (onsite)
Travel: None required
Key Responsibilities
- Clean, trim, slice, section, and weigh meats for packaging
- Cut meat accurately to trim and yield specifications using cut tickets
- Operate knives, cleavers, meat saws, bandsaws, and related equipment safely
- Inspect meat products for defects, bruises, or blemishes and remove excess fat
- Obtain and distribute specified meat products as needed
- Clean, store, and maintain knives, scales, and other tools
- Perform mathematical calculations and conversions for accurate order sizing
- Maintain compliance with USDA guidelines and product labeling requirements
Required Qualifications
- 0-3 years of experience in meat cutting, trimming, or processing
- Proficiency with knives, cleavers, meat saws, and bandsaws
- Ability to read and follow cut tickets to meet trim/yield specifications
- Basic math skills for order sizing and conversions
- Knowledge of USDA guidelines and labeling compliance standards
- Ability to work in a cold environment and stand for extended periods
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a unionized production or food processing facility
- Familiarity with inventory and custom order fulfillment processes
- Strong attention to detail and quality control mindset
