Summary:

Under the direction of the Superintendent or General Foreman, Mechanic A/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT equipment (buses or non-revenue vehicles) for maintenance work.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts a variety of testing, repair, installation, and maintenance tasks on equipment including engines, transmission, HVAC, electrical systems, brake systems, suspension, steering, electronics, and painting equipment, as well as:

  • Remove, inspect, repair, replaced all component as necessary

  • Removes and replaces defective parts

  • Removes and replaces defective diesel engine components

  • Removes and replaces engine and transmission

  • Able to Rebuild engine

  • Able to diagnose various vehicle components

  • Repairs equipment using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment and measuring instruments

  • Performs necessary adjustments to diesel engine (e.g., valve, timing, injector heights)

  • Determines whether or not equipment is able to stay in service

  • Inspects bearings, axles, and related parts of brake system

  • Able to replace, repack, and adjust wheel bearing on brake system

  • Repairs and maintains all facets of the brake systems (including air brakes)

  • Changes filters, oil, tires, worn parts, and light bulbs as part of equipment inspection

  • Education, Experience, and Qualifications: Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED, ASE certification a plus

  • Possess at least three (3) years of auto body shop experience

  • Possess a valid NJ License with the ability to obtain a CDL License with passenger endorsement OR possess a valid NY/PA CDL with passenger endorsement

  • Be able to pass the pre-employment physical and background checks

  • Have a good driving record with less than five (5) points

  • Normal working hours are 7:30 am-4:00 pm Monday to Friday (possible overtime)

  • $3,000 Signing Bonus for CDL A or B Permit Holders with air brake and passenger endorsement (also CDL A or B licenses holders that have either air brake or passenger endorsement)*
