Job Title: Bus Mechanic
Reports to: Transportation Director
Start Date: July 1, 2026
Contract Length: 226 Days
Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and after hours as needed
Primary Purpose:
- Service and maintain all district buses and vehicles.
Qualifications:
Certification:
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements or ability and willingness to obtain one.
Experience:
- Experience as a mechanic required.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Service and maintain all district buses and vehicles, including:
• Checking the fluid levels in buses and vehicles regularly
• Changing oil and other fluids using vehicle manufacturer recommendations
• Checking belts, hoses, wiper blades, and batteries regularly
• Keeping updated records of all maintenance and repairs on each individual bus and vehicle
- Handle all inquiries from bus drivers about maintenance requests and vehicle issues.
- Answer phone calls after hours while trip buses and district vehicles are out and respond to roadside assistance requests.
- Order and maintain an inventory of filters, oil, & coolant parts, belts, hoses, and other supplies.
- Make service requests and repairs in a timely manner.
- Perform annual registration inspections on district vehicles and ensure stickers are applied when purchased.
- Keep current insurance cards and registration paperwork in all district vehicles and buses.
- Request quotes, negotiate shipping expenses, and search for the best price on parts.
- Keep shop tools, storage, and work area clean and organized.
- Establish and maintain a routine for fueling route buses and checking fluids.
- Ensure all bus and district vehicle exterior windows and windshields are clean.
- Fuel and service trip buses and vehicles after each trip, including checking fluids, windows, and windshields.
- Wash and clean vehicles and buses as time allows.
- Trip vehicles should be clean and presentable before the next assigned trip.
- Monitor trip board and trip log to make sure vehicles that are going out are full of fuel.
- Monitor trip board and trip log to communicate needed repairs in case an assigned vehicle needs to be changed to another vehicle.
- Fill in for the Transportation Director as needed.
- Assign vehicles in the districts One to One software program and complete daily fuel readings and logs when the Transportation Director is unavailable.
