    Clay County is seeking a skilled and dependable Mechanic I to join our Fleet Maintenance team. In this hands-on role, you'll perform advanced maintenance and repairs on a diverse fleet of county vehicles and equipment that support essential public services. From heavy equipment and dump trucks to pickups and specialty vehicles, your expertise will help ensure our fleet is safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community.

    What You'll Do

    As a Mechanic I, you will:

    • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, and other county assets.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and equipment-related issues.
    • Complete repairs independently while working under the general direction of the Fleet Supervisor.
    • Assist with equipment recovery, transport, loading, and unloading.
    • Maintain accurate records of repairs, labor hours, and parts used.
    • Ensure compliance with all county safety policies and shop procedures.
    • Assist fellow maintenance staff with routine maintenance and repair projects.
    • Respond to after-hours emergencies and public safety events, including snow removal operations, storm response, and road obstruction removal.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    What We're Looking For

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • Strong knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
    • Experience servicing heavy equipment, trucks, and light-duty vehicles.
    • The ability to diagnose mechanical problems and complete repairs efficiently.
    • Experience operating shop equipment and diagnostic tools.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • The ability to work independently while collaborating with a team.
    • Excellent communication and recordkeeping skills.
    • A commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment, light equipment, trucks, and other vehicles.
    • Experience performing manual labor in a maintenance or mechanical environment.
    • State vehicle inspection certification is preferred but not required.
    • Successful completion of a background investigation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Valid Missouri Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker and hazardous materials endorsements, or the ability to obtain these endorsements within six months of hire.

    Work Environment

    This position works primarily in a fleet maintenance shop but also performs work outdoors in all weather conditions. Employees may work around heavy equipment, construction sites, traffic, and emergency response operations. The position requires frequent standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in environments that may include dust, noise, heat, cold, rain, snow, and other challenging conditions.
