    Mechanic 1 & 2 1 SNOQUALMIE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION

    Job Title: Mechanic 1 & 2 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Director of Transportation Classification: Classified-PSE Directed by: Lead Mechanic Supervises: None Work Year: Twelve Months per Year Salary: As Stated in Schedule Position Summar y: The Mechanic I is an entry level position which diagnoses and repairs mechanical and electrical pr oblems and performs required work in the repair, installation, alteration, service and maintenance of buses, vehicles, and related equipment. Qualifications Required Mechanic 1:

    • Possesses or can obtain a current Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger/School Bus Endorsements.
    • Basic knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules and regulations for school buses and other types of vehicle equipment.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of how truck and automotive drive train, suspension, brake, and electrical systems operate.
    • Basic understanding of electrical diagnostics.
    • One or more years of prior successful mechanic experience.
    • Possesses appropriate mechanic hand tools and storage cabinet.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Detail oriented; possess strong initiative and excellent organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication in the English language, including correct grammar and spelling usage.
    • Legally eligible to work for any employer in the United States of America as verified by Form I-9.
    • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance. Qualifications Required Mechanic 2:
    • All of the above AND
    • Thorough knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules and regulations for school buses and other types of vehicle equipment.
    • Thorough understanding of electrical diagnostics.
    • Five or more years of prior successful mechanic experience. Qualifications Desired:
    • Previous experi ence in a public school setting or related learning/development environment. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • Works and performs functions listed below under the guidance of a Lead Mechanic.
    • Performs weekly fluid checks and inspections: Mechanic 1 & 2 2
    • Belts, exhaust system, coolant system, and fuel system.
    • Air and hydraulic brake system.
    • Condition of tires, suspension, and steering components.
    • Performs effective preventative maintenance and inspections:
    • Belts, exhaust system, coolant system, and fuel system.
    • Changes fluids, as required.
    • Air and hydraulic brake system.
    • Condition of tires, suspension, and steering components.
    • Presents bus fleet for annual Washington State Patrol inspections.
    • Maintains fleet records, as required.
    • Troubleshooting:
    • Diagnoses and troubleshoots problems with both diesel and automotive drive train, suspension, brake, and electrical systems.
    • Uses appropriate diagnostic tools and instruments as necessary.
    • Accurately determines the reason for part or component failure and replaces as necessary.
    • Responds to emergency roadside assistance needs of district fleet vehicles.
    • Pursues continuing knowledge of changing technology.
    • Quickly adapts to interruptions and changes in priorities.
    • Shares informa tion with fellow mechanics, and may complete work that another mechanic started.
    • May assist in determining road conditions during inclement weather. Nonessential Skills and Experience:

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.     • Physical Demands - Majority of the time spent standing or walking around inside the transportation shop; reach with hands or arms; balan ce; stoop/bend; talk and hear; may lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Work Environment- Majority of time spent in heat-controlled shop, adequate lighti ng, with concrete floor; some time spent outdoors in varying weather conditions; use of PPE such safety glasses, shoes, hearing protection. Performance Standards: The person in this position wil l be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the district policy on evaluation of classified employees. Approval/Revision Date: May 6, 2022 General Sign-off: The employee is expected to adhere to all Snoqualmie Valley School D istrict policies and procedures.
