Position Summary

Maintain and repair City vehicles and equipment; maintain and repair gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy and light construction, and other power-driven equipment and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility to include preventive maintenance and fueling of off-site heavy duty equipment.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.

  • Perform skilled mechanic duties involving repairs to gasoline and diesel powered automotive, transit, heavy and light construction, and other power-driven equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties on automobiles, trucks, and a variety of gasoline and diesel powered construction equipment.
  • Diagnose, maintain and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, computers, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters and batteries.
  • Diagnose, maintain, repair and recondition hydraulic systems; diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears and chain drives.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.
  • Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts and reconditioning and adjusting carburetors, throttle body and port fuel injection systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
  • Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors and hydraulic and air brakes.
  • May be required to fuel and lube various types of off-road equipment; maintain fuel receipts as required.
  • May weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.
  • Diagnose and repair engine cooling system malfunctions.
  • Perform safety inspections on all City vehicles and ensure all repairs have been completed before vehicle is released from garage.
  • May deliver and pickup City automobiles, heavy equipment and parts from outside repair vendors.
  • May perform emergency road calls of disabled vehicles, diagnose operational problems and perform repairs as required.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials; contact vendors and suppliers to obtain parts and materials as needed.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Two (2) years technical training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repair; and

Two (2) years experience in minor and major automotive maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment.

A National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification is preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Drivers License. or ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operators Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:

Shop environment; exposure to dust, grease, noise and fumes; work in confined spaces.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, bending or crouching for prolonged periods; moderate to heavy lifting; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
