Job Title: Mechanic II Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt Reports to: Shop Supervisor/Director of Transportation Date Revised: September 2025 Dept./School: Transportation Salary: PG5/Transportation Hiring Schedule - 260 days

Primary Purpose: Perform daily minor and routine mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and safety of school buses and all other district vehicles. Perform projects assigned and follow established procedures. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High school diploma or equivalent At least 21 years of age Valid Class "B" CDL Texas driver license with p-passenger and s-school bus endorsement Basic computer skills Brake Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills: Excellent work habits and ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision Ability to operate equipment and tools involve in vehicle repair Ability to visually inspect and service vehicles Ability to list heavy equipment and parts Ability to operate a school bus as needed including route assignments Ability to pass required bus driver safety training Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Maintain a clean driving record Other duties as assigned

Experience: 2 years' experience as mechanic/technician; diesel and automotive Major Responsibilities and Duties: Maintenance and Repairs

  1. Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical issues in vehicles.

  2. Perform minor mechanical repairs.

  3. Perform repair, replacement, and balancing of tires on school buses and all other district vehicles and equipment.

  4. Perform brake repair and replacement according to Texas D.O.T. standards or air and hydraulic brake systems.

  5. Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, and lights; service as needed. Job Description Montgomery Independent School District

  6. Aid in roadside assistance for breakdowns in and out of district.

  7. Maintain a clean and safe work area.

  8. Assist in maintaining shop, tools, and equipment in good, safe operating condition.

  9. Maintain accurate records on repair orders of work performed and materials required to perform repairs.

  10. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established procedures and manufacturers safety standards.

  11. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.

  12. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

  13. Operate buses and other district vehicles as needed including driving routes.

  14. Fuel route and trip buses.

  15. Work irregular hours as needed. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles Posture: Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions Motion: Moderate walking, climbing; frequent grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; moderate driving Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (40 pounds and over) daily Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
