Description

This is a non-exempt position which requires highly skilled and specialized mechanical work at the Journeyman or Master level in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automobiles, large trucks, heavy equipment, diesel repairs, and specialized equipment for various municipal departments of the City of Plantation.

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Examples of Duties

Performs all types of repair work on automotive equipment, including relining brakes, removing transmissions, repairing electrical systems, rebuilding engines, changing and balancing tires, repairing and replacing air conditioning units, repairing and replacing exhaust systems, and various other related mechanical duties.

Performs advanced diagnostic test, repairs, and major overhaul of automobiles, trucks, and a wide variety of specialized departmental equipment.

Performs various skilled mechanic duties, including repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment, heavy and light construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment as needed.

Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered maintenance, construction, and various departmental equipment.

Repairs and replaces components as needed, such as generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, and high-voltage light systems.

Operates various types of equipment, machinery, precision instruments, and specialized tools and devices in the course of work.

Designs and fabricates various parts and components in order to repair and rebuild a wide variety of specialty mechanical equipment.

Diagnoses defects, makes repairs and performs minor and major work on a wide variety of small engines and any small applicable equipment.

Performs routine preventative maintenance on various small engines.

Performs general shop maintenance, including sweeping, cleaning, fabrication of pig tails, inventory, delivery of supplies to stations, organizing of back stock, maintaining personal area and toolbox, and updating the maintenance board as needed.

Maintains simple but accurate records of all work performed.

Welds, brazes, solders and cuts various metals by torch and rig welder as needed and if required.

Executes purchase orders authorized by the department director as needed.

Performs related work as required and as directed.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures of the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, various heavy equipment, and diesel engines.

Knowledge of diesel repair and large truck repairs.

Knowledge of the procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive and heavy and light construction equipment.

Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engines.

Knowledge of the tools used in maintenance and repair of small engines.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety practices.

Knowledge of repairing air conditioning systems and modern electrical systems.

Skill in written and verbal communication.

Skill in the use of relevant tools, machines, and testing instruments of the trade.

Skill in the operation of various types of precision computer diagnostic equipment.

Skill in mechanical repair of various trades.

Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs.

Ability to perform preventative maintenance on all fleet equipment, including oil changes, tuning, brakes, cooling, electrical, and all other phases of automotive repair.

Ability to maintain a variety of shop and repair records.

Ability to read and understand various manuals, blueprints, and schematics.

Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and correctly.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and complete work assignments correctly.

Ability to adhere to tight schedules while maintaining work quality.

Ability to supply own working tools as needed.

Ability to operate various departmental vehicles and possess the required license.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other city personnel.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 5 years of Journeyman or Master-level experience in automotive mechanics; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid State of Florida driver's license. Possession of a CDL Class "A" license (Or obtain as the discretion of Public Works Director)

ASE certification for Automotive and Med-Heavy Truck T4 - Brakes, T5 - Suspension & Steering, T8 - Preventive Maintenance Inspection need to obtain at the discretion of the Director

Acquire National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100C, IS-700D, IS-200C IS-800D at the discretion of Public Works Director.

Work Environment

The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.

Probationary Period

All new employees serve a one (1) year probationary period from date of hire.

Working Hours

Most full-time employees work 40 hours per week unless otherwise indicated.

Hours of Operation Monday through Friday (except City Holidays) 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM unless otherwise noted.

Pay Check

Pay checks are issued bi-weekly every other Friday; direct deposit of paycheck required to any banking institution is mandatory.

Insurance Coverage

Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Closest thousand to amount of Annual Salary (policy paid for by the City) up to $50,000.

Hospitalization, Major Medical, Dental and Vision

The Employee pays a portion of the cost for themselves and for dependent coverage at a rate established by Administration.

Dependent Coverage: spouses are eligible only if they do not have entitlement to participate in another employers group medical plan or Medicare.

General Employees Pension

Retirement - Mandatory contribution is 4% of base pay.

Normal Retirement Date: Age 59 and completion of 10 years of credited service.

Holidays

The City of Plantation observes eleven (12) paid holidays per year as declared by the City Council each year.

Personal Day

All full-time employees will be given the benefit of one (1) personal day per calendar year. Cannot be used until employed six (6) months; can not be carried over from one year to the next.

Sick Leave

13 days per year. Accrues 4 hours at end of each bi-weekly pay period. Maximum accrual is 480 hours.

Annual Leave

General Employees

1 - 5 years - 13 days per year

5 - 15 years - 19 ½ days per year

15 years or more - 26 days per year

Maximum Accrual is 240 hours. An employee is not entitled to use annual leave until employed 6 months.

Funeral Leave

3 days (8 hours each)

Jury Duty

Paid full salary - all fees received, excluding mileage must be turned into the City.

Educational Reimbursement

Employees will be entitled to a refund of their tuition and lab fees upon the successful completion of each approved course based on the following scale: (After one (1) year of employment)

Grade A.....................100 percent refund equal to the state fees charged

Grade B.....................75 percent refund equal to the state fees charged

Grade C.....................50 percent refund equal to the state fees charged

"Pass" in lieu of grade.....50 percent refund equal to the state fees charged
