JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Water Pollution Authority -Executive Director or designee, assists in the inspection, maintenance and repair of various types of mechanical equipment and processing units; cleans, maintains and checks sewer lines; performs custodial tasks at various facilities and pumping stations as needed; does related work as directed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists in the maintenance and repair of various types of mechanical equipment, including pumps, cranes, blowers, compressors and other equipment located in the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations.

Assists with assembling, disassembling, cleaning, replacing parts for wastewater type equipment.

Assists the senior mechanic in the installation of new equipment or repair of existing equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment for proper operation, including cranes, aerators, clarifiers, thickeners, and pumps and pumping equipment, compressors and other process equipment in the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations.

Assists with inspecting equipment for signs of malfunction and assist with troubleshooting to determine issues and problems with pumps and equipment.

Checks pumps and other wastewater equipment periodically for leaks.

Uses electronic tests equipment to collect data such as vibration and shaft alignment.

Assists cleaning and maintaining sewer lines; operates sewer maintenance equipment, including TV inspections equipment, flushing and vacuum units.

Performs various building and grounds maintenance tasks such as, cleaning, painting, grass cutting, etc.

Checks WPCA fleet to ensure proper maintenance and operational order; checks for and reports damages, needed oil changes, required service and /or repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES

Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials of the mechanical trade used in mechanical maintenance and repairs.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the mechanical trade.

Ability to perform maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of mechanical equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

Ability to maintain records and produce simple reports.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and outside contractors as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited high school (or possession of a high school equivalency certificate) and one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in mechanical maintenance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: At time of appointment, possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Within nine (9) months of appointment, must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

CAREER PROGRESSION:

This is an entry/training level wastewater maintenance position. Upon successful completion of one (1) year of training and experience as an MIT, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's license AND possession of a CT Grade I Collection System certification, promotion without examination will be made to the classification of Mechanic I - WPCA (Level I).

SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: There will be written examination weighted 100%,which will test for the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1.Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials of the mechanical trade, as applied to building and mechanical maintenance.

2.Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.

3.Ability to maintain records and prepare standard reports.

4.Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
