Mechanic
1.0 Job Summary
Perform activities associated with the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems in the plant.
Perform activities associated with preventative maintenance for mechanical equipment including pumps, valves, gearboxes, bar screens, conveyors, and gear reducers, etc. Trouble shoot problems and develop solutions. Communicate with other crafts, operations personnel, lab personnel, and others concerning mechanical systems. Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as mobile crane, backhoe, forklift, and dredge, etc. Assist other crafts as needed. Other related duties as assigned.
2.0 Typical Duties and Responsibilities
2.1 Perform daily administrative tasks such as competing work orders, request quotes for equipment parts and repair, and maintaining inventory and records.
2.2 Troubles shoot problems and develop solutions to correct those problems on all mobile and stationary pieces of equipment.
2.3 Perform activities associated with the precision alignment of mechanical equipment.
2.4 Communicate with operations personnel, purchasing, vendors, and other plant personnel concerning mechanical systems.
2.5 Perform shop rebuild of pumps, valves, etc.
2.6 Maintain clean shop work areas, vehicles, office area, and general housekeeping throughout the facility.
2.7 Perform other related duties as assigned.
3.0 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
3.1 Comply with all safety policies and procedures.
3.2 Ability to read memoranda, daily work schedules, log sheets, regulations, flow meters technical manuals and procedures.
3.3 Ability to perform mathematical calculations necessary to compute plant flows and sample test results.
3.4 Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
3.5 Ability to write memoranda, log sheets, work orders, and other reports.
3.6 Ability to use hand tools, air wrenches and motor driven valve operators.
3.7 Ability to operate and maintain assigned vehicle.
3.8 Ability to communicate orally, in person and by telephone, radio or computer (e-mail)
3.9 Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment used in the operations of wastewater treatment plants.
3.10 Skilled in troubleshooting and problem-solving mechanical issues
3.11 Ability to read work orders, shop manuals, and memoranda.
3.12 Ability to operate assigned vehicle.
3.13 Ability to operate power and hand tools such as drill press, grinder, saws, welders, high frequency cutters and Oxy/Acetylene torch.
3.14 Ability to possess a TWIC card and necessary HASC cards.
3.15 Ability to operate power equipment such as drill press, grinder, saws, and welder.
4.0 Physical requirements
4.1 Ability to sit for extended periods while performing various job functions such as entering data, making calculations, and completing log sheets.
4.2 Ability to stand, walk, crouch/stoop, squat, twist upper body, and climb stairs as well as ladders while moving about plant.
4.3 Ability to grasp with both hands and manipulate by lifting, reaching, and twisting valves, and hose.
4.4 Ability to pass annual physical.
5.0 Education, certification, and experience required
5.1 High school diploma or equivalent.
5.2 Experience in the maintenance and repair of mobile and stationary equipment.
5.3 Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
5.4 Qualified to operate 50-ton mobile crane, or ability to achieve qualification within 1 year.
6.0 Environmental conditions
6.1 Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with occasional requirements to work in extreme heat (110 degrees F) and cold (0 degrees F) in all weather conditions.
6.2 May involve exposure to potential noise, mechanical, electrical, explosive fume/odor, chemical, and toxic waste hazards associated with waste water work requiring proper precautionary procedures and safety equipment.
6.3 Work is at an industrial facility that is located in an industrial area, subject to precautionary procedures as required by local emergency managers.
