Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:

The Generator Technician (Mechanic Technician III) performs maintenance and

repairs to Caterpillar and Onan generators, including transfer switches, performs scheduled preventative maintenance on emergency generators (approx 350 generators throughout the city), perform load bank testing.

Other duties include:

• Perform preventative maintenance

• Ensures availability of generators during storm and other weather related events

• Maintain tool and parts inventory on generator service truck

• Test generators for correct rotation, voltage and frequency.

• May backfill the Marine Shop and Small Engine Shop when needed

The incumbent must have the ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair Emergency Power Systems, to include but not limited to both diesel and natural gas standby emergency generators, Automatic Transfer Switches (AST's) Load Banks; to include generator control panels, engine components, wiring harnesses, ATS's controllers and mechanisms. Knowledge and experience performing controlled power outages for testing purposes, operational readiness, and safely troubleshoot electrical power generating equipment.

Preferences:

• Experience in utilizing software such as Cat-ET, Site Tech and GenLink

• Experience with reactive/resistive load bank testing

• Automated fleet work order software experience

• Experience repairing digital and analog transfer switches

• Experience with electrical/electronic troubleshooting

• Cummins Power Generation Certification

• Confined Space Entry training or experience

• Experience with preventative maintenance on diesel and gas equipment

• Experience with generator repairs of any type

• Electrical/electronic troubleshooting experience

• Experience diagnosing and repairing other types of diesel engines, in addition to generators.

The idea candidate would posses:

• Professional job experience maintaining and/or repairing generators.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of eighth grade plus five (5) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic, or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of pre-employment physical. May require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). May require a State Inspectors License. May require current Refrigerant Recycling Certificate. May require Brake Inspector Certification. May be required to complete Confined Space Entry training.
