Job Title: Mechanical Department LeadDepartment: EngineeringReports to: Engineering Manager GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)The Mechanical Department Lead Engineer supervises the Engineers and mechanical designers in the discipline, conducts peer reviews, ensures quality assurance reviews of the work, leads complex project work, manages personnel development and succession planning, teaches and mentors, plans and distributes the work, manages the group toolbox, and ensures continuous improvement of standards, toolboxes and workflows. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESHEALTH AND SAFETYWork in compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations for CementationBe aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety DepartmentEnsure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technologyBe a champion for safety, advocating safe behaviour while incorporating safety into the designs produced by the group GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThis description lists the core responsibilities and duties of the position. Additional duties deemed to be within the incumbent's capabilities, on an as required basis, might be assigned by management.Provide level of effort estimates for proposal submissionsAdhere to Cementation Engineering design standardsAs requested, attend technical conferences, representing Cementation's capabilities, and attend seminars that will further Cementation's knowledgeAs required, participate in marketing or bid meetings to answer questions related to project scope, or Cementation's technical capabilitiesMonitor the Mechanical Department and designers regularly to maintain group viability. Forecast workloads and ensure the group is "right-sized" to meet current and future needsCollaborate with Project Services and Operations groups to produce "Best for Project" designs that are safe, reflect the client's operability requirements, and are constructibleAssess group availability against the current workload, arbitrate priorities with Project Managers, discipline Leads, Design Manager, and assign work appropriatelyActively participate in the development of employees, understanding their career aspirations and developing pathways for achievement. Develop and manage the plan and budget for required trainingConduct annual performance assessment reviews in accordance with company policyMaintain a balance in the range of experience in the group, from junior to senior, including a succession plan that ensures long-term group successAs an expert in the operation of the engineering software used by the group, understand and manage software and hardware needs for the group, including budget, quantity and status of licenses, and interoperability status of softwareRegularly review 'state of the art" software/hardware industry developments, monitor the software skills of engineers, mitigate risks and act on opportunities to ensure long term technical capability of the groupManage the maintenance and development of departmental discipline-specific standards ensuring conformance with current codes, standards, and mining regulations. Specific standards include specifications, design basis and criteria templates, design spreadsheets, workflow procedures, and change management formsAssist the team in identifying long lead procurement items, provide coaching on current industry delivery periods, coach discipline Engineers on the preparation of technical and scope of work documents and the importance of project schedulesCoach discipline Engineers on protocols to be followed in providing technical assistance during tender periods. Provide expert opinions on an as requested basisCoach discipline Engineers on protocols to be followed in providing technical assistance during the fabrication/manufacturing period, to ensure that Client and project requirements are met.  Provide expert technical opinions as required.As required, attend design review meetings, answering questions related to design basis and criteriaAt conceptual stage, make recommendations on basic type or style of system (mechanical or electric equipment or structure), then collaborate with designers to pre-select designs from Cementation's existing portfolio of projectsCollaborate with designers to establish how drawings will be laid out to ensure that the Engineer's requirements will be adequately conveyedEnsure that for each project, Engineers are completing and filing all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, Engineering design manual and company and Client standards. Manage and monitor the filing of all calculationsProvide coaching to discipline Engineers in the selection of mechanical systems and components, completing all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, Cementation and Client standardsEnsure that the group is made aware of, is provided with copies of, and is using the most current versions of codes, standards, regulations, company and client standardsParticipate in design reviews, ensuring that the plant completely satisfies its fundamental purpose while being safely and efficiently maintained and operatedMonitor projects to ensure that design reviews meet client operability and operations constructability requirementsMonitor projects to ensure that risk assessments which identify and mitigate risks are performed. Participate and provide expert opinions as requiredAt various project phases, complete timely review and mark-up of drawings, ensuring collaboration with other disciplines, project managers, project services and operations, designers and quality group to ensure timely "one time only" reviews. Ensure compliance to Engineering design calculations, codes, standards and regulationsComplete code and math checks of own work. As required, complete code and math checks of other EngineersMonitor projects to ensure that peer review of Engineering designs and calculations are conducted to ensure "Best for Project" designs, best industry practice and compliance with codes, standards, regulations, and Cementation and Client standardsConduct peer reviews of complex projectsDuring construction, assess and provide technical recommendations in response to field enquiriesIn providing field solutions, understand and enforce Change Management principles, use Cementation standard forms, and ensure that project scope, budget and schedule are always respectedMonitor projects to ensure that during project close-out both the Client's and Cementation's requirements have been met. Provide necessary documentationCoach discipline Engineers on the requirements for project close out documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory, Client and Cementation requirements. Monitor projects, to ensure completionDevelop and manage a monitoring program to ensure that tests, inspections, and measurements mandated by regulation or by the Engineer-of-Record, are completedOther duties as assigned TRAVEL REQUIREMENTSThis position has the requirement for occasional travel to project sites and officesTravel period may range from one day to several weeks and may include overseas assignments SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESSupervisory responsibilities for all Engineers and Direct Reports within this Discipline, including Specialist EngineersProvide supervision of direct reports, including regular technical review of work, checking adherence to working hours, compliance with company and regulatory standards, codes and regulationsDirect, review, approve and stamp the work of Engineers in TrainingMay direct, oversee, check and stamp the work of Engineering Interns, or check and counter-stamp work in other jurisdictions or for Certificate of AuthorizationAssess the behaviour and performance of workers, providing praise and encouragement to good performers, while holding low performers accountable.  Enforce company policy through disciplinary action as requiredParticipate in group recruiting efforts by preparing candidate requirements, interviewing, assessing and recommending candidates, and managing the probationary periodCheck and approve the timesheets of direct reports. In collaboration with Project Managers, manage and approve the group vacation schedule and flex schedules, ensuring sufficient group coverage EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEBachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited institution or equivalentMasters or Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering considered an assetRegistered as a licensed Professional Engineer with either a single or multiple statesExperience in discipline specific design of medium to large underground and heavy industrial infrastructurePrevious relevant work experience in managing medium sized Engineering groups15 to 20 years of relevant experience SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIESDemonstrate leadership abilityCollaborative team playerRespectful and professionalEffective and influential communicatorEngaged and innovativeSelf-starter who is responsible and accountable for their work, and the work of othersAdaptable and responsive to changeKnowledge of underground mining/above ground infrastructureKnowledge and skills in the following software are considered an asset:Revit, Autodesk Inventor, Navisworks, Solidworks, or other recognized 3-D parametric or associated design softwareNastran, ANSYS, Pipe-Flo, AFT Fathom, CAESAR II, Compress, PV Elite, or other recognized mechanical engineering analysis softwareMS Office Suite, MS Project, Primavera, Hard Dollar Cementation is an Equal Opportunity
