Description
As a Closures Sealing Engineer, you will work with some of the industry's brightest minds and take engineering ownership of complete static and dynamic sealing systems as well as Daylight Opening trims for Tesla vehicles. Your work will focus on static and dynamic seals for current vehicle programs, with an emphasis on quality improvement, cost reduction, and manufacturing enhancements. Additionally, you will be responsible for the engineering and design of static and dynamic seals and DLO trims for future vehicle programs.
Your ownership of seals will include initiating and overseeing both virtual (CAE) and physical testing and analysis to validate new designs from concept to production. This role provides a great opportunity to interface with all aspects of vehicle development. You will work closely with the body, closures, electrical/firmware, exterior, and interior teams, as well as with manufacturing engineering, to establish world-class seal and trim designs along with world-class assembly processes.
Serve as a member of the Vehicle Engineering Team, supporting closure system static and dynamic sealing and DLO trim development for Tesla vehicles
Fully specify elastomeric seal designs through the creation of specification drawings
Initiate seal CAE studies, interpret results, and iterate until geometry and materials meet design targets
Select appropriate materials for elastomeric static and dynamic seals and DLO trims
Understand manufacturing processes used to produce elastomeric seals, TP & metallic trims, and assembly processes
Achieve innovation-driven closure sealing & trims system targets for appearance, function, quality, cost, and weight
Establish system level architecture and functionality based on market research, design feasibility and prototyping. Creation of component specifications, and other technical design documents
Participate in the iterative process with the Tesla design and styling studio to deliver the optimal balance of form, function, and quality
Interpret/develop Tolerance Analysis, CAE, DFM, DFMEA, PFMEA simulations/results and integrate feedback into product designs
Manage and collaborate with key suppliers (both internal and external) to support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/ production build events
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, with evidence of exceptional ability
3 years of experience in the design and engineering of Automotive Closures
Strong understanding of GD&T
Ability to interpret FEA results and integrate recommendations into product designs
Experience designing new and improved seals and trim components using design software
Proficiency in CAD software V5/3DX for designing 2D sections and 3D geometry of seals. Experience designing complex seal molds is a plus
Proven track record of ownership of seal and trim designs from concept (new or improved) through production
Experience collaborating with supply chain partners in the development of new seals and trims
Must be proactive in improving processes and driving projects-examples of such initiatives should be provided
Excellent communication skills, resourcefulness, and time management
