Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer role leads the end-to-end development of heavy-duty truck accessories and systems for commercial and vocational truck platforms. You will focus on mechanical design, integration, and validation of complex accessory products, including hydraulic systems, structural components, and electrical integration. Working as a key member of a fast-paced product design team, you will deliver innovative, durable, and high-performance solutions tailored to demanding customer applications and industry requirements.

Responsibilities Include

• Lead the mechanical design and integration of heavy truck accessory products such as hydraulic liftgates, tool storage systems, service bodies, utility cranes, winches, PTO-driven systems, and other chassis-mounted equipment.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, controls, hydraulics, and manufacturing teams to develop fully integrated solutions.
• Own product development from concept through production launch, including prototyping, CAD design, FEA, DFM, and validation testing.
• Design robust mechanical structures and assemblies using steel, aluminum, and composite materials for heavy-duty environments.
• Develop and optimize hydraulic systems, including pump/motor selection, circuit design, and performance tuning.
• Ensure seamless electrical integration of powered accessories with truck OEM or aftermarket power and control systems.
• Create and maintain detailed engineering documentation: drawings, BOMs, engineering change orders, and test reports.
• Support validation testing, including environmental, fatigue, load, and field testing.
• Engage with suppliers and customers to define requirements, resolve technical challenges, and ensure product compatibility.
• Support continuous improvement in product performance, cost, and manufacturability.

Skills & Qualifications

• Experience and success designing heavy-duty industrial products.
• 5+ years of experience in design principles related to large multicomponent assemblies.
• Proficiency in CAD with a strong preference for Creo.
• Engineering knowledge to evaluate test results to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
• Experience evaluating and solving design-related issues in manufacturing and production assembly.
• Excellent communication skills with proven experience interacting with other groups to finalize product designs.
• Disciplined, motivational personality who is self-motivated and results-oriented.
• Hands-on approach and mechanical aptitude.
• Pride and commitment to accuracy, detail, and well-thought-out designs.
• Thorough and consistent documentation habits paired with excellent organizational and management skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced product design team.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mentor, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $57.69/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
