We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a full-time opportunity with our client in Merrillville, IN. The ideal candidate will have 5 8 years of mechanical engineering experience within heavy industrial facilities, with experience in primary steel and aluminum production environments strongly preferred.

This position will be responsible for mechanical design and engineering throughout the full project lifecycle, including equipment layouts, piping and hydraulic systems, fabrication-level drawings, field evaluations, calculations, and technical documentation.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical systems, equipment, and components to meet project and client requirements.

• Develop mechanical designs, layouts, schematics, and fabrication-level drawings using AutoCAD.

• Evaluate existing equipment and field conditions and develop practical engineering solutions.

• Modify existing designs to improve performance, reliability, safety, and maintainability.

• Support mechanical projects from proposal and conceptual design through detailed design and project completion.

• Develop scopes of work, technical specifications, engineering reports, cost estimates, and project schedules.

• Perform field investigations and clearly document existing conditions.

• Coordinate with project managers, engineers, designers, clients, vendors, and other disciplines.

• Lead and direct small mechanical design teams and manage assigned engineering/design hours.

• Perform engineering and quality reviews of mechanical drawings and deliverables.

• Ensure designs comply with applicable client requirements, governmental regulations, and industry codes.

• Design and evaluate industrial piping and hydraulic systems, including pumps, control valves, filtration systems, and related equipment.

• Perform piping sizing based on flow requirements, service conditions, and applicable industry standards.

• Develop hydraulic schematics using appropriate engineering symbols and standards.

• Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic systems.

• Perform HVAC calculations and equipment sizing for industrial facilities.

• Support equipment layouts and mechanical systems associated with heavy industrial manufacturing processes.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

• 5 8 years of mechanical engineering/design experience in a heavy industrial environment.

• Experience supporting primary steel, aluminum, metals processing, or similar heavy manufacturing facilities strongly preferred.

• Experience with die cast machine layouts, processes, and operations.

• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD.

• Ability to independently manage mechanical engineering projects from proposal through completion.

• Ability to produce and review fabrication-level mechanical drawings.

• Strong knowledge of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, and materials science.

• Working knowledge of applicable ASME, AWS, and NFPA codes and standards.

• Working knowledge of industrial HVAC calculations and equipment sizing.

• Knowledge of welding procedures, techniques, and welding symbols.

• Ability to read, develop, and review mechanical and hydraulic schematic drawings.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to clearly communicate technical information through drawings, reports, specifications, and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive industrial process piping design experience.

• Experience with pipe sizing and hydraulic calculations.

• Working knowledge of pipe stress analysis software such as CAESAR II or similar.

• Experience designing or supporting hydraulic systems, including pumps, control valves, and filtration equipment.

• Previous experience leading or directing a small mechanical engineering/design team.
