Tesla's is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to work on a critical challenge facing the world's energy transition - Battery Recycling. In this role, you will oversee the deployment of commercial scale assets that enable Tesla to recover critical metals from scrap streams.

  • Provide technical ownership and review of mechanical designs for quality, feasibility, constructability, safety, and adherence to best practices
  • Work projects through concept development, detailed design, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning
  • Partner closely with maintenance, operations, controls, EHS, and quality teams to ensure projects meet production, reliability, and safety requirements
  • Execute mechanical troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement efforts during installation and commissioning
  • Conduct walkdowns with site representatives to verify proper installation
  • Develop construction plan taking into consideration arrival time, and rigging strategy
  • Coordinate building and utilities construction with infrastructure teams based on equipment needs
  • Review and comment on incoming vendor documents (calculations, drawings, data sheets etc.) to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes/specification/practices
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies as necessary
  • Confirm pressure vessels meet ASME Sec VIII, Div. 1 and ASME B 31.3 requirements
  • Degree or Equivalent Experience in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 4+ years of mechanical experience in a commercial scale manufacturing environment, ideally specializing in chemical process equipment
  • Strong mechanical fundamentals with demonstrated ability to apply engineering judgement to real-world equipment and manufacturing problems
  • Experience designing, procuring, installing, and commissioning capital equipment
  • Hands-on experience supporting operating equipment, including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, repair scopes, and design improvements
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools
  • Working knowledge of fabrication, machining, welding, and assembly processes
  • Familiarity with applicable engineering codes and standards (ASME, API, PIP)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with ability to engage in technical discussions across engineering disciplines
  • Up to 50% travel
