Job Title: Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Design Technician

Job Description

This mid-level Mechanical Design Technician role supports new product development and manufacturing activities for a smart building technology organization. You will work hands-on to build, test, and refine mechanical components and assemblies during active manufacturing and product launch phases. The position combines CAD-based mechanical design with practical testing and prototyping in a fast-paced engineering environment, with strong exposure to mechanical, electrical, and development teams.

Responsibilities

• Support testing of products by setting up and breaking down mechanical and functional test fixtures.
• Execute mechanical and functional tests according to defined engineering test plans and procedures.
• Assist with prototyping activities and iterative design validation for new and existing products.
• Document test results accurately and report findings and recommendations to engineering teams.
• Create and modify detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies, including sheet metal and plastic parts.
• Support component and assembly design with a strong focus on design for assembly and manufacturability.
• Assist in the design of manufacturing tooling for major projects and product initiatives.
• Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and development engineers on new product development and launch projects.
• Provide hands-on support on the manufacturing floor while products (such as shades) are actively being produced.
• Assist engineering teams during tooling build, validation, and refinement activities.
• Support semi-autonomous engineering groups responsible for both standard and custom tooling solutions.
• Participate in a primarily mechanical engineering-focused team engaged in new product development, product launch, and ongoing production support.

Essential Skills

• Experience using CAD software for mechanical design, with a strong preference for Creo.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling and creation of detailed engineering drawings.
• Experience with manufacturing and tooling environments, including exposure to tooling design.
• Working knowledge of mechanical component and assembly design, including sheet metal and plastic parts.
• Familiarity with machining processes, tooling, and design for assembly principles.
• Ability to support hands-on testing and prototyping activities, including mechanical assembly and test support.
• Ability to document test results clearly and communicate findings to engineering teams.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced engineering environment with active manufacturing and product launches.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Strong experience with Creo is highly preferred.
• Background with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD platforms, with transferable skills accepted.
• Exposure to AutoCAD is a plus.
• Familiarity with GD&T is nice to have but not required.
• Experience with detailed drawings, tooling design, and design for assembly is advantageous.
• An associate's degree in a relevant technical field is preferred but not required.

Work Environment

This role is fully onsite at a campus-based facility and is embedded within a primarily mechanical engineering-focused team that collaborates closely with development and electrical engineering. You will work in a hands-on environment that blends office-based CAD work with time on the manufacturing floor, supporting new product development, product launches, and an ongoing major manufacturing tooling initiative. The position offers a long-term opportunity with a mix of design and practical build/test responsibilities. Standard benefits include paid time off, with two weeks of PTO and eight paid holidays. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
