A well-established mechanical and plumbing contractor is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and engineering of commercial HVAC and mechanical systems throughout Southern California. This role works closely with project management, estimating, BIM, and field teams to develop practical, constructible solutions from preconstruction through installation.
This is a strong fit for someone with HVAC or building mechanical systems design experience who wants to work in a design-build environment and stay closely connected to the construction side of projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop HVAC and mechanical systems for commercial construction projects
Perform heating and cooling load calculations, equipment sizing, and system selections
Develop mechanical plans, specifications, schedules, and supporting calculations
Support design-build and design-assist projects from early concept through construction
Coordinate mechanical systems with plumbing, electrical, architectural, and structural disciplines
Work closely with BIM/VDC teams on system layouts, coordination, and constructability
Review drawings, submittals, equipment selections, and technical documentation
Assist with value engineering and alternative system evaluations
Coordinate with project managers, estimators, field teams, clients, and design partners
Provide engineering support throughout construction, commissioning, and project closeout
Requirements
3-6+ years of mechanical engineering or HVAC design experience
Experience designing HVAC systems for commercial, healthcare, institutional, industrial, or similar building projects
Strong understanding of HVAC equipment, ductwork, hydronic systems, and building mechanical systems
Experience with load calculations, equipment selection, and mechanical system design
Experience working with AutoCAD and/or Revit
Familiarity with applicable mechanical codes and energy requirements
Design-build or mechanical contractor experience strongly preferred
Ability to coordinate effectively with BIM, project management, and field construction teams
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field preferred
EIT or PE license is a plus
