Mechanical Engineer - Data Center ConstructionSWJ Technology specializes in providing engineering, planning, and project management services across various industries. We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer – Data Center Construction for a client in the commercial and industrial construction industry. This position is offered as a contractor or direct hire.PURPOSEThe Mechanical Engineer – Data Center Construction supports the design, construction, and commissioning of data center facilities. The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience with mission‑critical environments and is knowledgeable in mechanical systems supporting high‑availability, high‑density data centers.RESPONSIBILITIESDesign, review, and oversee installation of mechanical systems for data center facilities, including:HVAC, chilled water, and air‑handling systemsCooling strategies (air‑cooled, liquid‑cooled, and hybrid systems)Plumbing, drainage, and fire protection systemsSupport mechanical system layouts in coordination with architectural, structural, and electrical teamsReview construction drawings, specifications, and submittals for compliance with project requirements and codesCoordinate with contractors, vendors, and commissioning agents during construction and startupPerform site inspections to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to design intentSupport commissioning, functional testing, and turnover of mechanical systemsParticipate in risk assessments, value engineering, and constructability reviewsTroubleshoot mechanical system issues during construction and early operation phasesEnsure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements (ASHRAE, NFPA, local building codes)QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent5+ years of experience in building construction, with a strong focus on data centers or mission‑critical facilitiesProven experience with HVAC and cooling systems for high‑density server environmentsFamiliarity with redundancy concepts (N, N+1, 2N) and reliability requirementsExperience working on active or brownfield data center sites is a plusAbility to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specificationsStrong coordination and communication skills with multidisciplinary teamsREQUIRED SKILLSStrong problem‑solving and analytical skillsAbility to work in fast‑paced, schedule‑driven construction environmentsAttention to detail with a strong focus on quality and reliabilityEffective written and verbal communication skillsPREFERRED SKILLSProfessional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensureExperience with commissioning processes and integrated systems testingKnowledge of energy efficiency strategies and sustainability initiativesFamiliarity with BIM / Revit and mechanical modeling toolsExperience working with hyperscale or colocation data center projectsPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSWork is normally performed in an office, laboratory, manufacturing floor, or machine shop setting where physical work includes, but is not limited to, sitting, standing, reaching, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.Must be able to understand and comply with all relevant safety practices.FLSA STATUS / WORKING SCHEDULELocation: Confidential, Southern AmericaSchedule: Flexible working hours required / Willingness to travel to project sites as requiredOvertime: As requiredAssignment Start: ASAPDISCLAIMERThis job description is a high‑level overview of general expectations of this position.
