BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Mechanical Technology

Master's or PhD candidates may be considered only if they have meaningful manufacturing design exposure.
3 years of manufacturing design experience required

Exceptions may be considered case by case if the candidate has:
o Significant, directly relevant roll-to-roll or machinery design experience
o Strong demonstrated SOLIDWORKS expertise

Experience should be in:
o Manufacturing equipment
o Automated or precision machinery
o Mechanical components and systems
Facilities or construction-focused design experience is not suitable.

SCOPE OF POSITION

- involves the application of mechanical principles encompassed in mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and machine design used for the design, production, operation, and use of machinery of all types.

Primary Purpose of the Role
To support early-stage mechanical equipment design within Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (MTandE) group, specifically the Advanced Machine Systems team.
The role focuses on designing, modifying, and supporting roll-to-roll web conveyance equipment with thermal processing systems for RandD and pilot-scale production.
Acts as a design resource supplement / partial backfill, working very closely with the hiring manager on a specific but evolving technical project.
Emphasis is on hands-on mechanical design, startup support, troubleshooting, and equipment alignment, not routine equipment operation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design process equipment, lead procurement of equipment and oversee and participate in assembly and installation of equipment

REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience with mechanical equipment engineering, design, installation, start-up and debugging in an early-stage development environment
- Ability to manage and own all phases of equipment design (problem statement, conceptualization, detail design, detail drawing package)
- Experience working with machine shops and managing the procurement phase of custom equipment
- Proficiency with SolidWorks and EPDM Vault
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to collaborate and work with diverse teams (skills, disciplines, gender, culture, race, etc.)
- Comfortable working with minimal direction and adapting to evolving requirements
- Independently determines and develops approaches to solutions
- Familiarity with other engineering disciplines (electrical, controls, process, etc.)

Required Skills Top 4:
1. Mechanical Equipment Design

3. Roll-to-Roll Web Conveyance / Web Handling
o Examples: film, paper, foil, battery manufacturing, continuous materials processing

4. Manufacturing / Production Equipment Experience
o Background in automated manufacturing systems or machinery design
o Design ownership rather than purely operational roles

- The following skills are strongly preferred:
1. Knowledge of thermal equipment fundamentals and proficiency in custom thermal equipment design
2. Proficiency in structural and thermal FEA modeling

Nice-to-Have / Preferred Skills:
Thermal Equipment Experience
o High-temperature systems (slot furnaces, kilns)
o Systems operating >1000 C

Thermal Design Fundamentals
o Heater selection
o Refractory and material selection
o Thermal expansion considerations

FEA / Simulation
o Preferred, not required

SOLIDWORKS PDM / EPDM (Vault)
o Experience preferred
o Training can be provided if candidate is strong otherwise
