Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Utility Technician is responsible for safely operating, monitoring, adjusting and maintaining a variety of utility systems, including high pressure steam boilers, ammonia refrigeration, well water, potable water, hot water, fire suppression, pneumatic, and HVAC equipment. This role requires hands-on experience with a diverse range of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as the ability to perform routine and emergency repairs, preventative maintenance, and system inspections. The operator must be proactive, self-directed, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Key responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all assigned daily PM's are completed.
  • Assemble or disassemble complex mechanical, electrical, and utility equipment, components, and systems.
  • Monitor, inspect, and test the functionality and quality of mechanical, electrical, and utility equipment, components, and systems.
  • Record test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and recommendations for changes in product or test methods.
  • Analyze test results related to design or rated specifications and make modifications as necessary.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, or drawings to determine test specifications and procedures.
  • Assist engineers to design, develop, test, or manufacture industrial machinery, consumer products, or other equipment
  • Provide technical support to other employees regarding mechanical design, fabrication, testing, or documentation.
  • Read dials and meters to determine amperage, voltage, electrical output and input at specific operating temperature to analyze parts performance.
  • Test performance of electrical, electronic, mechanical, or integrated systems or equipment.
  • Test machines, components, materials, or products to determine characteristics such as performance, strength, or response to stress.
  • Use tools ranging from precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices to common hand tools.
  • Prepare equipment inspection schedules, reliability schedules, work plans, or other records.
  • Listen for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discuss machine operation variations with supervisors or other personnel to diagnose problems or repair machine.
  • Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts.
  • Calculate required capacities for equipment of proposed system to obtain specified performance and submit data to engineering personnel for approval.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Educational requirement: 2 years of course work in an applicable field, practical and theoretical knowledge working directly with a degreed supervisor
  • Six-months proven ammonia refrigeration or high-pressure steam system experience
  • General mechanical or electrical maintenance experience
  • Read, write, and orally communicate in English and ability to work with no or little supervision
  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends and holidays as scheduled
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ammonia refrigeration or steam system Certifications or licenses (OP 1, Op2 CIRO, PSM)
  • Familiarity with PSM / RMP standards
  • One-year proven experience in an industrial ammonia refrigeration or high-pressure steam environment
  • One-year proven experience in general or advanced Maintenance
  • Familiarity with water treatment systems, steam auxiliary equipment, air compressors, air conveyance equipment, pumps, fire suppression, HVAC systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability and willingness to learn and advance in an industrial ammonia refrigeration environment
  • Ability and willingness to learn and advance in an industrial high-pressure steam environment
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to perform preventative, routine and emergency maintenance and repairs
  • Proficiency in communicating and collaborating with cross-functional teams
  • Competency in taking and logging system readings to ensure proper functionality
  • Self-directed with a strong ability to work independently
