MECHANICAL LAB SUPERVISOR

Primary Objective:

To oversee and assist in the coordination of Lab personnel, increase equipment reliability and reduce downtime.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily work assignments/supervision for hourly Lab department employees.
  • Reporting of Lab procedures / efficiencies
  • Maintain up-to-date training of the Lab Technicians
  • Monitor and report test progress through the Laboratory
  • Ensure all scheduled tests are completed according to the approved test procedures and approve and release all confirming tests
  • Effectively communicate department goals, achievements, problems, solutions, written practices, and changes
  • Schedule employees in order to meet production needs
  • Recommend improvements in production methods, equipment, quality, and working environments
  • Issue purchase requisitions for Lab supplies
  • Plan and maintain production schedules
  • Enforce Company policies and procedures (i.e., Safety, Quality, etc.)
  • Analyze and resolve work problems and assist employees in solving work problems
  • Recommend personnel actions (i.e., promotions, disciplinary, etc.)
  • Maintain time and production records
  • Instruct and ensure that employees are practicing safe work habits
  • Coordinate repairs with central maintenance or outside technicians
  • Coordinate waste acid disposal
  • Develop new machining / sample preparation techniques and needed
  • Maintain calibration program for the entire department.
  • Operate Chemical testing equipment as necessary when needed (Leco, XRF, OE)
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and initiate repairs as needed

Experience/Education:

  • 2-5 Years of relevant Lab experience
  • Bachelor's degree in any field of study, but a related technical degree is preferred
  • In lieu of degree, a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a Lab environment

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, preferably in a Union environment
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Fluent in Microsoft software
  • Previous knowledge of the steel-making process
  • Previous experience in Lab testing in the steel industry.

Physical Abilities:

  • Must be flexible to work off shifts, overtime, and occasional Saturdays
  • Must be able to stand/walk at least 50% of the workday
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to work around chemicals.
