Mechanical Systems Engineer — Pipe and Tube Machining

Where you’ll work: Rancho Cordova, CA (Tri Tool HQ) | Team: Engineering | Type: Full-time | Direct reports: None

Why this role matters

Tri Tool builds world-class tooling that enables precise machining and welding on pipe and tube—often in demanding, in situ environments. As the Mechanical Systems Engineer, you’ll transform ideas into rugged, manufacturable designs that our customers rely on every day.

Your impact (core responsibilities)

  • Partner across engineering, manufacturing, product, service, and repair to solve problems and bring differentiated products to market.
  • Create complete manufacturing and assembly drawings, GD&T callouts, and tolerance stack-ups in SolidWorks, following ASME Y14.5M.
  • Design mechanical tools, fixtures, components, and subassemblies with attention to BOM structure, material choice, strength, static thermodynamics, coatings, joining hardware, and cost-aware tolerances.
  • Engineer electromechanical solutions: specify AC/DC motors, servo motors, solenoids, and actuators.
  • Develop pneumatic and hydraulic circuits and select cylinders, valves, regulators, hoses, and fittings.
  • Administer accurate part data, revisions, and manufacturing BOMs in the ERP (Info Syteline).
  • Independently manage medium-to-large projects to completion with minimal oversight.
  • Support proposals with equipment cost and risk evaluations.
  • Assemble and test prototypes; troubleshoot in an R&D shop setting.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned.

What you bring

  • Experience: 5+ years in mechanical design, drafting, fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical tools/systems; or Master’s in engineering plus 3+ years relevant experience.
  • Tools: SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD/drafting expertise.
  • Standards: Proficient in GD&T and its correct application.
  • Mindset: Detail-obsessed, thorough, and relentless about meeting deadlines.

Nice to have

  • Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM) and AM process development.
  • Portable/in situ industrial tool design experience.
  • CNC machine and mechanism design background.
  • Design of cutting tool consumables (end mills, indexable inserts/holders, turning tools, etc.).
  • Custom industrial machinery and tooling design.

Education

  • BS in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering from an ABET-accredited university (required).
  • MS preferred.

Physical requirements

Lift/carry up to 50 lbs unassisted; over 50 lbs requires assistance. Wear PPE as needed. Regularly communicate verbally; frequently sit, stand, stoop, squat, walk, use hands to finger/handle/feel, and reach with hands/arms. Safely operate hand and power tools and engineering products. Use standard office equipment (computers, multi-line phones, scanners, copiers, paper cutters).

Work setting and travel

Office/cubicle environment (mild noise) with occasional off-site field work. Some travel to other company sites or client locations. Periodic work in shop/plant areas with moderate to loud noise and mandatory PPE. Collaborates with coworkers, supervisors, and client teams. May exceed 8 hours/day or 40 hours/week as needed.
