7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.

Occasional night and weekend availability might be necessary to accommodate special events and urgent repair tasks. Additionally, the on-call duty operates around the clock, 24/7, to address any unforeseen emergencies.

Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

The Mechanical Trades Technician provides the total campus population with an environmentally safe and secure area for the fulfillment of their educational purpose. Performs tasks in support of, or preparatory to, the work of electricians in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment up to performing complex electrical work in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. Prepares sketches or follows blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes. Places conduit, pipes, or tubing, inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pulls insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes. Works from ladders, scaffolds, or roofs to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment or fixtures. Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as ammeters and test lamps. Assembles, installs, tests, or maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools. Troubleshooting and repairing HVAC systems and plumbing systems campus-wide.

This position is designated as a covered employee in a non-restricted position in accordance with Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) Policy 2.20. A non-restricted position is one that is funded by sources considered continuous or recurring, such as Educational and General Funds.

A covered employee is a salaried employee whose terms and conditions of employment are subject to the Virginia Personnel Act and who is employed in a classified position. In accordance with DHRM policies, covered employees accumulate paid leave, participate in state retirement, life insurance, and related plans, participate in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program, are eligible to participate in the state health plan and flexible benefits program, and are subject to the provisions of all DHRM policies.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, abilities, and other competencies to be successful in the position:

  • Skilled in electrical and plumbing tools and instruments to install and maintain complex, electrical equipment 600 volts and below and plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices of the electrical trade, installation and maintenance of complex high and standard voltage electrical equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of the national electric code.
  • Knowledgeable in commercial plumbing with the ability to install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems in various commercial and industrial settings. This includes ensuring the proper functioning of water supply, drainage, and sewage systems to meet safety and regulatory standards.

Minimum required qualifications:

  • Journeyman electrician certification and/or 3 or more years experience in the trade.
  • Experience threading wire and cable through ducts, or conduits, repair electrical equipment, testing electrical equipment or systems to ensure proper functioning, and installing electrical components, equipment, or systems.
  • Commercial plumbing and HVAC experience.
  • Experience using building automation systems.
  • Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship or vocational training.

Additional Considerations

OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification

Ability to use analytical, scientific and/or industrial control software.
