Job Description
Mechatronics Controls Engineer

Mechatronics Controls Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a Mechatronics Controls Engineer to design, program, commission and support automated manufacturing systems. The role focuses on PLC and HMI development (primarily Rockwell/FactoryTalk), integration with plant networks and SCADA, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues on production equipment. The ideal candidate will blend electrical, mechanical and control-system expertise to deliver reliable, efficient automation solutions in a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, program and maintain PLC control logic using Rockwell/Allen-Bradley platforms for manufacturing equipment.
  • Design, configure and optimize HMI screens and applications using FactoryTalk and related visualization tools.
  • Commission and troubleshoot automated systems on-site, including PLCs, HMIs, drives, motion controllers, robots and associated sensors and actuators.
  • Integrate control systems with plant networks and supervisory systems using Ethernet/IP, Modbus and other industrial protocols.
  • Work with mechanical and electrical teams to design and review control panels, I/O wiring, and ladder/structured text documentation.
  • Implement and test motion control sequences, servo/drive configurations and robotic interfaces to meet production requirements.
  • Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring issues; apply continuous-improvement principles to increase uptime and performance.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation: functional specifications, wiring diagrams, PLC/HMI code comments, commissioning reports and SOPs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, lockout/tagout procedures and machine guarding requirements during design and commissioning.
  • Provide hands-on support to maintenance and operations teams, and train personnel on control-system operation and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience programming and commissioning PLCs and HMIs in a manufacturing environment, with proven Rockwell/Allen-Bradley experience.
  • Strong experience with FactoryTalk (View/ME/SE) for HMI/SCADA visualization and operator interface development.
  • Proficient in PLC programming languages (ladder logic, function block, and/or structured text) and in-field troubleshooting of control systems.
  • Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP and Modbus, and experience integrating systems with SCADA or MES.
  • Ability to read and produce electrical schematics, panel layouts and I/O lists; experience with control panel assembly and field wiring practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with Mitsubishi PLCs, Yaskawa drives/robotics, SCADA systems, motion control, industrial robotics integration, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, Ethernet networking, Modbus implementation, and control panel design.
  • Preferred certifications: Rockwell Automation certification or equivalent vendor credentials; experience with FactoryTalk certification is a plus.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to support cross-functional projects and train operations/maintenance personnel.
